﴾ Thamūd belied with their overflow. ﴿
Lying in Arabic is the undoing of truthfulness. And takdhīb, in the tafʿīl form, is the declaring that the one who brings a report is a liar and that the report is not true. Whoever belied a report declared, after hearing it, that it is void. And there is nothing in this act that points to ignorance or to falling short. Takdhīb is the stance of one who heard and then pushed back.
And Thamūd in the Surah is a belier. What they belied is stated by the verse that follows: a messenger came to them. They were not a people without a message reaching them, but a people whom the message reached and who then pushed it back. And in this attributing is a sealing of the point that belying is an act issuing from a soul that chooses, not from an ignorance to be remedied.
Thamūd is a proper name the Qur'an mentions in various places. In this Surah it enters as a collective, and a verb in the feminine form is attributed to it, kadhdhabat, because a people is feminine in agency in Arabic grammar when the group is what is meant. The Surah does not name their homeland, does not date their time, does not mention their lineage. It mentions of them what is enough for the example to present itself: a people who belied, who had a messenger who delivered a message, and in whose keeping was a particular she-camel, and they hamstrung her. This is what the Surah mentions, and it adds nothing.
The root ṭ-gh-w points to a flooding out past its limit. From it is ṭaghā al-māʾ, said of water when it overflows its channel, and ṭaghā al-insān, said of a person when he goes past what he ought to stop at. Ṭaghwā is a form naming the gathered state of that flooding: a pull that pushes the soul outside what holds her in.
And the bāʾ in bi-ṭaghwāhā is the bāʾ of cause. What carried them to the belying is their ṭaghwā. And this is a plain unfolding of the very thing said in the verse before: khāba man dassāhā. Ṭaghwā is one of the shapes that burying takes. The flood that goes out past the limit buries the soul under what covers her light. And one whose soul has been buried under his ṭaghwā no longer takes in a voice that comes to him from outside.
And in the binding of the ṭaghwā to their pronoun, ṭaghwāhā, is a sealing of the point that it is from them and not from anyone else. It is not a ṭaghwā that slipped loose in an age where ṭaghwā was the ordinary thing, but a ṭaghwā that was theirs by their own doing, which they chose and which they formed. And the people answer for it as the one who tends his soul answers for his tending.
Thamūd enters as an example in time of the rule the Surah has drawn. Kadhdhabat, with the doubled dhāl, is a belying sealed and repeated. And the bāʾ in bi-ṭaghwāhā is the bāʾ of cause: what carried them to the belying is not an ignorance of the evidence but a ṭaghwā. The root ṭ-gh-w is the going past the limit with force. The ṭaghwā came before the belying, and the belying is its fruit. The Surah moves from the weighed verdict, whoever tended and whoever buried, to the working of it out in a people who chose the second pan.
﴾ Thamūd a démenti par son débordement. ﴿
