﴾ The One who taught by the pen. ﴿
The root ʿ-l-m turns on the setting of the mark that tells one thing from another. Whoever knows is whoever has set for himself a mark that parts the known from the unknown. And ʿallama stands in the second form, tafʿīl: the act repeated and pressed home. Not ʿalima, a plain verb of knowing, but ʿallama: he carried the distinguishing mark across from what he knew to the one standing before him, until the taught one held of that mark what had been in the teacher's hand.
And the Book, when it chooses the doubled ʿallama, signals that teaching is no passing handover but a pressing of the mark into the learner until it settles in him. And the tool chosen for this act is the pen. The pen lays on a surface a line that stays. And the teaching in the verse is a line of that kind: a meaning cut in, and not wiped out.
Qalam, in the root q-l-m, points to cutting back and evening out. Nails are pared; the reed is pared. And the pen itself, taken as a noun, means the stalk that has been cut and evened. So the tool one writes with is made ready by two acts: cut from its stem, then evened at the head, so that it lays down a steady line. One does not write with just anything. One writes with a tool made for writing.
And in this a lesson opens onto the reader himself: whoever would be written with must first be pared. The reed does not write until it is evened. And a person does not receive what he receives until he has been trimmed back. The pen, in its very shape, is a reminder of that discipline.
This verse looks straight across at a verse in al-Baqara: ﴿وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا﴾, "and He taught Adam the names, all of them." The same verb: ʿallama. The same object: the human in his first shape. There it was said, He taught Adam the names. Here it is said, He taught by the pen. The names were the mark by which the one set to follow on the earth (khalīfa) was told apart. And the pen is the tool by which such marks are kept.
And in al-Baqara the next sentence follows at once: ﴿ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنبِئُونِي بِأَسْمَاءِ هَٰؤُلَاءِ﴾, "then He set them before the angels and said, tell Me the names of these." The teaching was a distinction conferred, not an expertise acquired. The One who created Adam from dust taught him what the angels did not know. And the One who created this human from a clinging clot taught him by the pen what was not in his hand. The same generosity comes round again: from the clot to the names, and from the names to the pen.
A second relative clause is added to the Nurturer, the Most Generous. The first was "the One who created," the second is "the One who taught." Between the two the Surah draws the arc of that generosity: from creating the human out of a clinging clot to teaching him by the pen, from the clot to the word. ʿAllama (ʿ-l-m) is on the second form: a pressed carrying-over of the distinguishing mark from teacher to learner, until it settles in him and stays. Bi-l-qalam (q-l-m) carries the bāʾ of instrument: the pen is not the teacher but his tool, and the root turns on cutting and evening. Nails are pared, the reed is pared: the tool itself is made ready by an act of trimming, and it does not write until it has been evened. And the verse joins the teaching of al-Baqara, ﴿وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا﴾, the same verb and the same gift. There the names are the instrument of standing in succession on the earth; here the pen is the instrument by which the names are kept.
﴾ Celui qui a enseigné par le calame. ﴿
Et le verset rejoint l'enseignement d'al-Baqara, ﴿وَعَلَّمَ آدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا﴾, le même verbe et le même don.
