﴾ Because your Lord has revealed himself to her. ﴿
The bāʾ here is the bāʾ of cause, and anna carries the verbal noun. The sense: she tells her news because your Lord has revealed to her. The speech that came out of the earth is no accident, and no blind tremor that happened to let something slip. It is an utterance under order.
And in the address there is a sudden turn: "your Lord," you are the one addressed, you and every reader after you. The Book turns toward you in the middle of the scene to remind you that the Lord you know is the one moving this earth on its day. This was no strangeness. It was the authority of the one you serve (ʿ-b-d).
Waḥy, in the Arabic tongue, is a hidden and rapid sign that penetrates as far as the one charged with it. It is not a speech that lengthens; it is a casting into the inward that runs fast. And this Book uses the root in varied places: ﴿وَأَوْحَىٰ رَبُّكَ إِلَى النَّحْلِ﴾ for the bee, and "has revealed ... to her" here for the earth. The verb is one, and the recipient changes.
And what descends upon the earth of revealing is not a qurʾān to be recited. It is an order that charges her with her last state: speak. And she speaks. This revealing, before which the human has failed in so many states, to do what he is ordered, the earth discharges at the first casting. Inanimate creation, in this Book, is more obedient than we are.
"Has revealed ... to her" is said with the lām, not awḥā ilayhā with ilā, nor awḥā ʿalayhā with ʿalā. The lām marks attribution and what belongs to one alone. The revealing that came down upon her is a revealing that is hers. Every creature in this Book has what belongs to it of the casting: to the sky what is the sky's, to the earth what is the earth's, to the bee what is the bee's, and to you what is yours.
And in al-Baqara the revealing comes down upon the heart: ﴿نَزَّلَهُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ﴾. There the heart is the place of the qurʾān; here the earth is the place of the permission to speak. The divine act is one, and the place changes. Whoever understands this knows that the whole world is a network of receiving, and that his own last voice will say what was cast into him.
The verse gives the cause with the causal bāʾ: she tells her news because your Lord "has revealed ... to her" (w-ḥ-y). Revealing, in this Book, comes down upon the prophets, upon the bee, upon the sky, and here it comes down upon the earth. And the earth does not interpret it, she carries it out. What descends upon her is an order that charges her with her last state: speak. And she speaks. "Your Lord" carries a turn toward the reader: the Lord you know is the one moving this earth on its day. This is no strange affair, it is the authority of the one you serve. And inanimate creation, in this Book, is more obedient than we are: the earth speaks at the first casting, while the human hesitates before orders of lesser weight.
﴾ Parce que ton Seigneur lui a révélé. ﴿
Et dans al-Baqara la révélation descend sur le cœur : ﴿نَزَّلَهُ عَلَىٰ قَلْبِكَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ﴾.
