Commentary
This is a hallowing that follows upon the counting of the blessings. After the signs of life-giving and of fruit came the declaration of transcendence: "Glory to the One who created all the pairs." Subḥān (root s-b-ḥ) is a hallowing that removes the Hallowed far from every deficiency; its origin is the going and the distancing in water and in air. It is as though the soul, having seen this precision, removed its Maker far from every likeness and every lack. The term azwāj (root z-w-j) is the plural of zawj, that which never exists except with its counterpart, so every kind is paired with what stands opposite it or completes it. "All of them" takes in the kinds without exception: there is no single one in creation but it has a pair facing it.
Then He set out three domains of pairing in a rising order. "Of what the earth grows" is what they witness in the plants, male and female, kind and kind; "and of themselves" is nearer to them, the pairing set in their own creation; "and of what they do not know" is what is hidden from them, what their knowledge has never reached. So He graded from the seen, the plants, to the nearest, themselves, and then to the unknown, in order to establish that pairing is a comprehensive law surpassing all they have encompassed in knowledge. Sealing the detail with "what they do not know" opens the door onto the vastness of a creation that their limited knowledge does not exhaust.

Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as a hallowing of Allah and an enumeration of His creating pairs, of plants, humans, and others, as proof of His oneness and power.
A root-reading
Subḥān (s-b-ḥ) is a hallowing whose origin is distance and going: a removing-far from every lack. And azwāj (z-w-j) is what only ever is with its counterpart. The grading is three: the seen (plants), then the nearest (selves), then the unknown ("what they do not know"), so pairing is a law surpassing their knowledge.
A reading that hears the grading of the three domains from the seen to the unknown.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Reflection
The word "Glory" came outside its accustomed place: not in a station of supplication nor at the opening of a prayer, but right after the mention of grain, palms, and springs. As though contemplating the life-giving and the fruiting drives the soul to hallowing: whoever reflects on how life emerges from the dead grain cannot but remove its Maker far from every lack and incapacity. So the hallowing here is the fruit of contemplation, not a mere remembrance on the tongue.
And what was chosen for the hallowing in this place is a specific attribute: "created all the pairs." It drew attention to the fact that all creation rests upon pairing: nothing in existence is a singular self-sufficient unto itself, but everything is bound to a counterpart facing it. Plants are pairs, selves are pairs, and what we do not know is pairs. In this is a subtle reminder that absolute singularity belongs to the Creator alone: He is the One who has no pair, and all besides Him is paired and sustained. So whoever seeks self-sufficient perfection in a creature seeks it in the wrong place.
As for sealing the verse with "and of what they do not know," it is a site of reflection on the human's size before creation: Allah affirmed pairs their knowledge had not reached, opening the door of epistemic humility. However wide a human's knowledge of pairs grows, in plants and in his own self, there remains beyond it what he does not know. So the verse trains the reader to let his knowledge stop at its limit, and to see in every unknown a door to a fresh hallowing: what is hidden from him is vaster than what is shown to him.
