﴾ And stand apart today, O you criminals. ﴿
After the peace of the Garden's people (verse 58) came the address that faces the other party: "And stand apart today." Imtiyāz (root m-y-z) is a separating and a standing distinct after a mixture, from māza, said when he set one thing apart from another. So they are commanded to separate themselves from the people of faith who used to mingle with them in the world. The word "today" signals that the mingling of the world ends here: the neighbouring ceases and the sorting takes place. So the command to stand apart proclaims that the confusion is over; whoever used to hide himself among people is uncovered and sorted to his own rank, the command being to part from the people of peace.
"O you criminals" is a call that marks out those commanded by their description, not by their names. Mujrim (root j-r-m) is the one who cut himself off from the truth and earned the sin, so the crime is a severing of the bond with the truth and an earning of the misdeed. To call them by this description in this station is a rebuke, reminding them of what their own hands wrought in the very moment of their sorting. "The criminals" here stands facing "the companions of the Garden" there: those were ascribed to the abode of bliss, and these to their own act that severs the truth. So the naming discloses, each being called by that which he is fit for, and they are called by the description they themselves made.
