Commentary
The verb hadaynāhu, "We guided him," comes from the root h-d-y, which turns on a gentle pointing that sets the goal before the traveller. Hady is what is brought forward and led to its place; hadiyya ("a gift") is what one draws near by and so offers; the hādī is the one who goes ahead of a people and shows them the direction they are to take. Guidance, at its root, is a making-plain that shows the traveller the way and sets it before him, not a force that drives him along it against his will.
The pronoun "him" refers to the human being already mentioned, the one for whom two eyes, a tongue and two lips were appointed. After the instruments of seeing and speaking had been set in order for him, the way was set before him. The guidance here completes that setting in order: he was given what to see and speak with, and then shown by it where to go. So the making-plain comes before the walking, and the choosing is left to the one who was given the instrument for it.
What he was guided to is an-najdayn, "the two high paths," from the root n-j-d, which turns on a standing-out elevation that shows plainly to the one who looks. A najd is ground that rises and lifts until it comes into view; the nājid is what is high and overlooks; and the najda of a matter is its severity, which rises over the rest. A najd, then, is a raised place that does not hide, seen by the traveller from afar so that he does not stray from it.
The word comes in the dual, an-najdayn: two raised paths that show plainly, both in sight of the one guided to them. They are two overlooking heights, of which the traveller chooses one on clear evidence, not one road to walk and a pit to shun. The elevation in the noun suits the matter: the way that rises and shows plainly is the one on which the choice falls, and failing to see it carries no excuse, since a height by its nature does not hide.
The verse joins the setting in order of the human being to his guidance: after two eyes, a tongue and two lips were appointed for him, the way was set before him. The root h-d-y is a gentle pointing that shows the direction and sets it before the traveller, not a driving by force; so the making-plain comes first, and the choosing is left to the one given the instrument. "The two high paths," from n-j-d, are two raised, standing-out places, plain to the one who looks, two lifted paths both in sight, of which the traveller chooses one on clear evidence, not in blindness. So the verse makes the two paths high and uncovered, lifting the excuse and laying the answerability where the instrument and the making-plain were laid.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"And We guided him to the two heights" is read by many as the two ways of good and evil, the meaning being: We made plain to him the path of obedience and the path of disobedience. The inherited reading also takes the two as the two breasts, to which the nursing infant is first guided, a reading that fills in what the two heights stand for.
A reading that fixes what the two heights name, good and evil, or the first sustenance to which the newborn is guided.
A root-reading
Hadaynāhu (root h-d-y): a gentle pointing that sets the way before him and shows it, not a force that drives him to it. An-najdayn (root n-j-d): two raised, prominent places that stand out to the eye, and the dual makes them two elevated paths, both manifest and uncovered. The verse becomes: "We showed him two high ways that hide from no onlooker, so that the choice between them falls on clear sight, and there is no excuse in being blind to them, for a height does not conceal itself."
A reading that hears in najd the standing-out elevation, so the two paths are raised and uncovered, and lift the excuse.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes what the two heights name; the second hears, in the root, the shape of a standing-out elevation that lifts the excuse. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
From the making-plain to the weight
The verse stands the human before two paths, not one. Guidance here is not a carrying toward a single direction, but the showing of two raised faces and then the leaving of the traveller to choose. This ties to what came before: two eyes for seeing, a tongue and two lips for making plain, then two paths for choosing. The instrument comes first and the choice follows, and the weight falls where the instrument and the making-plain were laid.
The elevation lifts the excuse
The choice of the word najd ("height") rather than "road" or "way" carries an added meaning: a height by nature does not conceal itself. Had the two paths been low and hidden, the excuse of not seeing would hold; but since they were made two prominent heights, the excuse is lifted. Of a way seen from afar, one does not say, "I did not see it."
There may be, in the dual of the height, a pointer to what attends the being capable of making plain: that the creature handed the instrument of seeing and speaking may by it stand before a standing fork, not before a single driven course. This may be one face of what sets this creature apart from the other living things: that its way is not stamped into it as a single instinct, but two paths stand raised before it, visible, and it chooses. And perhaps the weight of this repeated choosing is part of the "hardship" (kabad, root k-b-d) named at the opening of the Surah. All of this is a surmise at which we stop, not advancing it to a claim.
