﴾ Those are the companions of the right hand. ﴿
"Those" (ulāʾika) points to a group far off and raised high in rank. The demonstrative refers to those named in the preceding verses: the ones who stormed the steep ascent, loosed a neck, fed on a day of biting hunger, and counselled one another to patient endurance and to mercy. So "those" serves to gather them into one row after their deeds have been enumerated, and to point to them in a way that distinguishes and elevates them.
The distance implied in "those" denotes height of rank and its clarity, not distance of place: these are the distinguished ones, known by what they did. So the demonstrative separates them from all others and prepares for the description assigned to them, one that fixes their side and their position.
The root ṣ-ḥ-b turns on a companionship that stays fixed and an enclosing that does not come loose. The companion (ṣāḥib) is one who has kept to a thing, holding on to it and holding it, until he has come to be named after it. The companions of a thing are its people who keep to it and are known by it, so that it is never mentioned without their being mentioned with it. So companionship here is a rooted belonging that makes the group and that by which it is described one thing, not a passing proximity.
That is why "the companions of the right hand" affirms a lasting attachment: these kept to the side of good fortune, and it kept to them; they became its people, known by it. The maymana is a settled dwelling after which they are named, as a household is named after its home, not a state that comes upon them and then passes.
The root y-m-n brings together the right hand, the right side, blessing and good fortune (yumn). In Arabic usage the right (yamīn) is the side with which one takes and gives, the side of strength, of honour and of good omen, and what comes from the right is maymūn, blessed. So the maymana is the place and direction of good fortune, the side associated with blessing and elevation.
So the companions of the right hand are those named after this blessed side, whose deeds, already mentioned, have carried them to the direction of good fortune. This description occupies the place of recompense, following the place of deeds: whoever stormed the steep ascent by climbing has become one of the people of the side associated with good fortune and blessing, in contrast to whoever is named after the other side.
"Those" refers to the ones whose deeds were enumerated before, gathering them into a distinct, elevated row and separating them from all others. A description of two words is then assigned to them: "companions," from ṣ-ḥ-b, an attachment that holds and does not part, for they are the people of this side, known by it; and "the right hand," al-maymana, from y-m-n, the side of good fortune, blessing and honour. So the verse establishes a fixed bond between the climbing deed and its recompense: those who stormed the steep ascent kept to the side of good fortune and it kept to them, and they became its people, as a household is named after its home.
