﴾ And those who covered over Our signs, they are the companions of the ill-boding side. ﴿
Kafarū bi-āyātinā, "covered over Our signs," is a covering laid over what points the way. The root k-f-r turns on veiling and covering. The kāfir, in the word's first sense, is one who covers a thing and buries it; and so the word is used of the night when it covers what lies beneath it, and of the sower when he hides the seed in the ground. Covering over the signs derives from this same root: the sign is covered while it is present, not lost from view, and the person lays over the evidence a veil that screens its indication from himself.
"Our signs" are marks that point to what lies beyond them, witnesses set up to be read. So whoever "covered over" them has turned back their indication and severed the tie between them and what they point to, rather than merely denying that they exist. Before this the Surah spoke of a road with a steep ascent, and of whoever storms it; covering over the signs is here the opposing face: a turning away from the mark that guides to the road.
"They are the companions of the ill-boding side" is a keeping to the side of worse omen. Aṣḥāb is from ṣ-ḥ-b: keeping company and accompanying. The ṣāḥib is one who has kept to a thing without leaving it, until he has come to be named for it. So these people keep to the ill-boding side and are named for it, as a companion is named for the one whose company he keeps; they are not passing by it. This naming makes that side a description bound to them, not a passing state.
Al-mashʾama is from sh-ʾ-m: the quarter of the left and the left-hand side, and from it comes al-ashʾam, said of that from which ill is augured and of which ill is thought. So the mashʾama is one side that unites two senses: the place of the left, and the heaviness of what is taken from its direction. Whoever is attached by name to this side has been coupled with what issues from it, as though the covering over of the signs had sent them ahead to the quarter from which the heavy outcome is taken.
The verse describes those who covered over the signs. K-f-r denotes veiling and covering, so covering over the marks is laying a cover on them while they are present and turning back their indication, not denying that they exist. Their recompense is a naming that endures: aṣḥāb, from ṣ-ḥ-b, is a keeping company that attaches the description to them by name, and al-mashʾama, from sh-ʾ-m, is the left side, from which what is heavy is taken. So whoever covered over the guiding mark is coupled with the quarter from which the outcome is taken, and has come to keep to it, not to pass it by.
