Commentary
The command came in the shortest form the language holds: one verb, two beats, "submit". And with it came the framing of the setting, "his Lord said to him", not "God said" and not "the revelation came down", but the lām that carries the speech over to Abraham alone. The address is particular in kind: the Lord who is the source of his growing speaks to him in the structure of a single imperative that admits no padding, and cuts every hesitation off in two beats.
The root s-l-m, in its two-letter nucleus s-l, is a flowing that clings, and the mīm is a gathering that crowns the flowing. So islām, in its deep structure, is an act of the heart that flows and then gathers into a single decision. And the answer came in the perfect and not the imperfect: he did not say "I will submit" nor "I am submitting", but treated the act as already accomplished in that same moment. The perfect here is not an earlier time; it is an immediate realising, an act finished before the command had done sounding.
Abraham did not say "I submit to You", nor "I submit to the God of my fathers"; he chose the widest form there is, "to the Lord of all the worlds". The Lord of all the worlds is not the god of a tribe nor the lord of a people; He is the source that orders every system in existence. This is why the way of Abraham became an opening for everyone who turns, and not something shut inside a lineage or a clan. The wider the direction of the handing over, the wider the milla of the one who hands himself over.
The verse hangs the speech on the lām in "his Lord said to him", making it a word directed to Abraham alone and not a public proclamation. And it attaches the lordship to him, "his Lord", so the speaker is the source that runs the growing of the one addressed. The form "said" does not tie the speech to one particular articulated wording; it establishes that the command reached the one it was aimed at and that the understanding fell into its place, the proof being that the answer, "I submit", came back matching it at once. Speech in the verse is a site of receiving and yielding before it is a site of hearing a sound.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: "I submit" in the verse is an accomplished act and not a sectarian term; its direction is the Lord of all the worlds and not the god of a tribe; and the way of Abraham begins where communal boundaries stop deciding who has handed himself over.
The command came in the verse with the least that speech can carry: "submit", one word from the root s-l-m, a flowing that gathers into a decision, with no additions and no condition. And it was sent to him alone, so the address is personal in kind. The answer came in the perfect, "I submit", and not in the imperfect, which makes the act complete in the very moment of the answer: a handing over that takes no postponement. Then Abraham widened the direction of his handing over from the god of a tribe to "the Lord of all the worlds", from the root ʿ-l-m, the source of every manifest system. That widening is what carried the way of Abraham across every tribe and every group. The verse also notes that the Lord's speech was hung on the lām, "to him", so it is a particular word aimed at Abraham alone, a site of receiving and yielding rather than the mere hearing of a sound. What gathers the verse: the act of handing over precedes the name of the religion, and a direction that takes in the worlds precedes the belonging of a clan.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as: God commanded Abraham with Islam, and he submitted.
A root-reading
"I have submitted" is a momentary act, an inner handing-over, not a membership in an institution. "Lord of the worlds" opens the door to every one who hands himself over, from every place, not for one group in particular. A reading that returns Islam to its original meaning: the handing-over of the world to the Lord of the worlds.
Deux lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"Submit": the command that summons an identical response in deed
The verse condenses the scene into a two-word dialogue: "When his Lord said to him: submit (aslim). He said: I submit (aslamtu) to the Lord of all the worlds." The reduction is worth pondering. Not a single word separates the command and the response: no hesitation, no pause, no condition. The command aslim is in the imperative (derived from the imperfect), and the response aslamtu is in the perfect (past) tense. The shift between the two forms reveals that the deed was completed in the very moment the command was issued.
This is a law in the Qur'an that distinguishes the prophets in their reception of their Lord's commands. The response is in the past tense even if the command was in the present/imperative, because the act in the self preceded its verbalization. Other places in the Qur'an reveal the same pattern. In al-Naḥl: "When He decrees a matter, He only says to it 'Be' and it is" (16:40). Kun (Be) is imperfect, and yakūn (it is) is imperfect, but the act between them is realized in a single moment. The rule: the command in the Qur'an, when received by one suited for it, is completed in the same time it is issued, without delay.
Consider the response "I submit to the Lord of all the worlds." Abraham did not merely say "I submit," he added the object: to the Lord of all the worlds. The choice is significant. He could have said "I submit to You," for the Lord is known in the command, but he chose the form rabb al-ʿālamīn which expands the position. He does not hand himself over to a Lord private to him, but to the Lord of all the worlds in their entirety. Handing-over in this form moves Abraham from the position of the individual to the position of one belonging to the total structure.
"To the Lord of all the worlds": handing-over breaks the monopoly of relation
The root ʿ-l-m in the form al-ʿālamīn denotes everything by which the Creator is known, that is, everything other than Him among the creatures. Al-ʿālamīn is the plural of ʿālam (world), and a world is what points to another. Handing-over to the Lord of the worlds is handing-over to the One who is Lord of everything that points to anything other than itself. This is a rhetorical choice in the response that breaks every potential monopoly.
Consider the repetition of this expression in the Qur'an. Al-Fātiḥa opens with "Praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds" (1:2). Al-Shuʿarā' uses it in the context of Moses' dialogue with Pharaoh: "Pharaoh said: and what is the Lord of all the worlds?" (26:23). Pharaoh's question reveals that the form rabb al-ʿālamīn places the position of the Lord outside what can be monopolised by any faction. Whoever enters into handing-over with this name exits every logic that restricts prophethood, divinity, or faith to a specific group.
The rule revealed by the response: handing-over in the Qur'an opens onto universality. Whoever hands over to his Lord hands over to the Lord of all the worlds, for they are in truth one in essence with diversity in the position of relation. Whoever makes his Lord something other than the Lord of all the worlds has made for himself a limited deity that suits his identity, which is the opposite of what Abraham did. The response in the verse defines this rule once and for all, separating those who hand over in truth from those who hand over in claim.
Relationship to what precedes and follows: the center point of the arc
The verse occupies the center point in the arc extending from 124 to 141. What precedes it presents what Abraham did in terms of building the House and prayer; what follows it will present the charge of islām to the sons. The verse condenses between these two sequences into a central point: what makes Abraham who he is, is his islām to the Lord of the worlds. Not the building, nor the prayer, nor the descent, but the handing-over realized in its moment.
The verse reveals the structure of Abraham's way in its essential form. Whoever wishes to be in his way, it is not enough to belong to him by descent or by name; rather, one should be in the same position of handing-over that he was in. Handing-over requires two halves: receiving the command from a Lord defined by "all the worlds," and a response that occurs in the time of the command itself. Whoever delays his response, or narrows the object of his handing-over to other than the Lord of all the worlds, is not in Abraham's position, no matter what he claims.
The next verse, 2:132, will move this handing-over into the form of a charge: Abraham charges his sons with this very act, and Jacob does the same. Handing-over passes between generations by charge (teaching), not by mere inheritance. The arc opens from Abraham to Jacob, then moves in verse 133 to the sons' position at Jacob's death. The rule: whoever charges with islām creates an extended sequence that continues after him, and handing-over in the Qur'an is a structure that generations inherit by instruction, not by mere descent.
