Commentary
The root w-ṣ-y has the two-letter nucleus w-ṣ, a strong containing that encircles, and the yāʾ is a joining that stretches on. So the waṣiyya, at the root of the word, is a tight binding that encircles a meaning and then attaches the heir to it. It is not a passing word at a parting; it is a handing on that ties the later to the earlier with the structure of a covenant. "Abraham instructed his sons with this" is not the tossing out of a stray counsel; it is the fastening of the trust onto the necks of the sons by the act of the father.
The pronoun "with this" goes back to the words "I submit to the Lord of all the worlds" that came just before, so the instruction is with that, and not with the name of a religion nor with any specified rite; it is with the state of handing over itself. And the joining of "and so did Jacob" attaches the grandson to the grandfather in one and the same act, establishing that the instruction is not an individual gesture but a structure carried along the chain. Abraham instructs his sons, Jacob instructs his sons, and every generation receives the instruction and makes it again.
"God has chosen this way of living for you" brings two pivotal roots together: ṣ-f-w, the sifting that takes the chosen in, and d-y-n, the pattern that binds, ties, and reaches inward. Dīn, in the structure of its root, is not the name of a school nor the banner of a sect; it is the pattern that pulls a life back toward its source, and from the same root comes dayn, a debt, the binding link to the source of a giving. And the choosing of the dīn is a divine sifting: God sifted out the pattern of indebtedness that suits the carriers of the trust, so whoever accepted the choosing carried the pattern, and whoever refused it stood indebted to another pattern.
The strange form of the prohibition, "so do not die", is not a prohibition of death itself, for death lies in no one's hand. What is forbidden is that death should take its owner by surprise while he stands outside the state of handing over. What is asked is therefore the lasting of a state and not the moment of a decision: that a person be at every moment one who has handed himself over, so that death does not find him in a different moment. The root s-l-m returns here in the continuing form, "people who have submitted": the active participle carries the handing over out of a past event and into a standing attribute. The instruction asks that death arrive with its owner inside the state, and not after he has stepped out of it and come back.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the instruction of Abraham and Jacob in the verse is not the passing of a school's name from one generation to the next; it is the binding of the sons to the continuing state of handing over, and the choosing of the dīn is a divine sifting of a pattern of living, not the announcement of a particular sect.
The verse carries the instruction from a person to a pattern: Abraham instructs his sons, Jacob instructs his sons, and the root w-ṣ-y uncovers that the waṣiyya, in its structure, is a tight binding that encircles a meaning and then reaches out to the heir, not a passing word at a parting. The pronoun "with this" goes back to "I submit to the Lord of all the worlds" in the verse before, so what is entrusted is not the name of a religion but the state of handing over itself. Then the ground of the instruction comes in two roots that complete each other: ṣ-f-w, the sifting that takes the chosen in, and d-y-n, the pattern that binds and pulls toward the source. God did not impose a religion; He sifted out a pattern that suits the carriers of the trust. And the verse closes on a strange form that makes death a boundary rather than an ending, "so do not die except as people who have submitted", where the active participle carries the handing over out of a past event and into a standing attribute: the instruction is not about a moment of islām but about the lasting of the state.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as the testament of Abraham and Jacob to their sons about Islam as a preserved religion.
A root-reading
The testament is about a state, not a name: stay handing yourselves over until death. "Religion" is a pattern of life responsible before the source, not the name of a sect. A reading that returns "Islam" to its existential dimension before its institutional one.
Deux lectures
Lecture courante
🔬 Reflection
"Abraham instructed his sons with this, and so did Jacob": instruction as a tool of transmission between generations
The verse builds the image of inheritance in a precise rhetorical form: "Abraham instructed his sons with this, and so did Jacob." The root w-ṣ-y in the form waṣṣā denotes a firm binding between one thing and another. Instruction (testament) in the Qur'an is not merely the transfer of news, but the binding of the instructed to the subject in a way that makes him committed to it. The pronoun in bihā (with it) refers back to what preceded in verse 2:131: handing-over to the Lord of the worlds. The subject of the instruction is the very thing Abraham handed himself over with in that verse.
The grammatical position is important. "Jacob" is conjoined to "Abraham," so the same act runs through both generations. The text does not say "Jacob instructed his sons" in a separate sentence, but joins the act and the subject in a single construction. This reveals that instruction in the Qur'an is not the act of a person that cuts off with his death, but a pattern that passes between the one who receives it and the one who comes after him. Whoever receives the instruction is likewise in a position to transmit it.
The rule: the way in the Qur'an passes between generations by instruction, not by mere descent. The father who instructs teaches his son the subject of the instruction enough for the son to become capable of instructing himself. Abraham opens this sequence in the arc, and Jacob in the same verse completes it as the first recipient. The Qur'an summarizes the structure of true descent in the Qur'an: it is not by blood but by instruction.
"My sons, God has chosen the way for you": election turns into a call
The root ṣ-f-w appeared in 2:130 regarding Abraham himself: "We chose him (iṣṭafaynāh) in this world." Here, the election passes to the sons, but in a different form. The text does not say "He chose you," but "He chose the way (dīn) for you." The lā- in lakum (for you) denotes the assignment of the subject for their benefit, not their choice in a distinguished position.
This is a structural construction. Election in Abraham was in his person; election in the sons is in the way. The person turns into a heritage, and the sons receive the heritage as a way chosen for them. But the choice for the way does not guarantee its reception. Therefore, the verse completes the warning: "so do not die except as people who have submitted." Election does not dispense with renewed handing-over every day.
The Qur'an uses "do not die except..." in more than one place, revealing that the final position demands an engagement extending to the point of death. In Āl ʿImrān: "O you who have attained awareness, guard yourselves for God as is His right, and do not die except as people who have submitted" (3:102). Same construction, same limit. The rule revealed by this phrasing: handing-over is not a passing position at a specific time, but a state whose continuation the Qur'an summons to the last breath. Whoever stops at some point has cut the sequence at that point, and what preceded does not avail him.
"Do not die except as people who have submitted": the ending in the form of a prohibition
The chosen phrasing in the conclusion: "do not die." The prohibition in its form draws attention. A human does not own his death, so he cannot prohibit himself from death. But the phrasing reveals a more precise logic: it does not prohibit the human from death, but prohibits him from dying in a state other than the state of islām (handing-over). The prohibition is directed toward the state, not the act itself.
The exception with "except" makes muslim (one who hands over) the only justified state in the moment of death. Suspending death upon the state summons a psychological structure: who can guarantee his state in the unknown moment of death? No one can. Therefore, the answer in the Qur'an is: renewed handing-over in every moment, so that whatever occurs of death is in accord with what one is in.
The rule revealed by the verse: islām in the Qur'an is not a position taken once and preserved, but a structure that must be maintained in every moment. Whoever leaves maintenance at any time risks death taking him in that moment. Therefore, the Quranic text often turns to "those who have attained awareness" with continuous tasks; for awareness is not in truth a complete and finished position, but a repeated path that dispels the accumulation of neglect. Abraham and Jacob instruct their sons with this maintenance in its essential form.
