Commentary
The root r-gh-b has the two-letter nucleus r-gh, an unbroken running in the inward, so desire is a movement that flows within before it shows outside. And the verse says "turn away from", not "desire in": the construction turns the sense over into a moving away rather than a drawing near. Whoever turns away from the way of Abraham has not settled for an outward distance; he breeds inside himself a current that carries the very structure of his self away from a road Abraham walked by mind and by trial. Desire here is an inward act before it is a stance.
The root m-l-l is a road that repeated walking digs out, so the milla is not a doctrinal text handed on; it is a course lived until it cuts its own channel. And the way of Abraham is a course he cut himself: the refuting of the living deities, the return to the Lord of the heavens and the earth, then the handing over, then the raising of the House, then the setting up of the rites. That is why turning from it is a turning from a road that was tested, not from a written school. Whoever turns away from it is not refusing a creed; he is refusing the trial of the human mind at the point where it reaches its source.
Foolishness, in the root s-f-h, is a lightness that scatters and ends in a void. "Except one who has trifled with his own good sense": it is not said of him that his mind fell short. The self is made the object of the verb: he is the one who made light of himself, because the self is the seat of the trust and the one that perceives the truth once it clears. Turning away from Abraham's course is therefore a verdict a man passes on himself before it is an opinion about the milla. The safīh here is the one who buries the self that would have turned had it been allowed to see.
The root ṣ-f-w is a strong sifting, ṣ-f, that takes the chosen in, w. The choosing is not a reward paid after the effort; it is the opening of the journey. God chose Abraham in this world and so opened the course to him, then tested him with words and he completed them in full, then made him a guide. The verse overturns the picture of an Abraham cutting his road alone: God is the one who begins, and Abraham is the one who answers. This reversal lifts the way of Abraham out of a private striving and into a standing divine order: whoever turns finds a choosing that was there before him.
The verse sets Abraham in two stations that complete each other: "We chose him in this world", an opening choice, and "in the next life he is among those who stand in their right place", the seal of the course. The root ṣ-l-ḥ is the standing in the correct position that fits a function, so the ṣāliḥ is not simply the good man; he is the one set where he belongs. Abraham, whom God chose in this world, moves on into the next life to stand in the position that fits his function. The choosing and the standing-right are one structure, stretched from here to there.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the way of Abraham in the verse is a course tested by mind and by trial, whose walker God chose at the outset and sealed with a right standing at the end; and whoever turns away from it buries the self that would have turned had it been allowed to see.
The verse opens with a question that turns back on whoever would ask it, "Who would turn away from the way of Abraham", and in the root r-gh-b with "from" there is an inward flowing that moves away, not an opinion announced. Then the roots answer: no one does this except one who has worked a s-f-h on his own self, a lightness that scatters until it opens into a void. And the verse has already fixed what the way of Abraham is, by the root m-l-l: a road that repeated walking digs out, not a creed committed to memory. It is a course God began and not Abraham, because the choosing, from ṣ-f-w, came first: a strong sifting that takes the chosen in, and the one who answers finds a hand that was there before him. The course is sealed by the root ṣ-l-ḥ: a standing in the position that fits the function. Abraham, chosen in this world, ends in the next life at the place that fits his role. What joins the four is that the milla is not a belonging but a walking: whoever turns from it does not mistake a direction, he buries himself.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
Usually read as: whoever turns away from the creed of Abraham has fooled himself, and the creed is Islam.
A root-reading
The creed of Abraham is the way of the rational among the creatures: a return to the source after everything less has been tested and found wanting. Refusing it is making light of the mind itself. A reading that shifts the verse from sectarian zeal to a rational defense.
Deux lectures
Lecture courante

🔬 Reflection
"Who turns away from the way of Abraham": distancing as a directional choice
The verse uses a precise rhetorical structure: "Who would turn away (yarghabu ʿan) from the way of Abraham?" The root r-gh-b in its origin carries a leaning of the self toward a desired object. Ordinarily, one would say yarghabu fī (to desire in/towards) when approaching something. But the verse uses yarghabu ʿan, a form that flips the action into the opposite direction: a leaning directed toward distancing from the thing, not approaching it.
The difference is subtle but profound. The first arises from the attraction of the object; the second arises from an aversion within the self. The one who turns away from Abraham's way does not merely remain neutral or ignorant; he actively directs himself away. This is more precise than simple neglect; neglect might be forgetfulness, but yarghabu ʿan is a choice directed toward exclusion.
The question is rhetorical: Who would do such a thing? The answer follows: "except one who has trifled with his own self (safiha nafsah)." The root s-f-h denotes a lightness of mind that makes one underestimate what should be valued. Trifle with the self here does not mean lack of knowledge, but lack of estimating the self in its proper place. The one who trifles with his self has ignored the position that fits it, removing it from the structure to which it belongs.
"We chose him in this world": choice linked to deed, not descent
The root ṣ-f-w in the form iṣṭafā denotes choosing what is pure from among what is mixed. From it comes ṣafwa (the elite/chosen) who are rid of impurities. The Qur'an uses this verb to describe God's choosing of His prophets: "We chose him in this world, and in the next life he is among those who stand in their right place." The choice is linked to this world; it is a position in the present time, whose outcome manifests in the next life.
Election in the Qur'an recurs for those chosen for a specific function. In Āl ʿImrān: "God chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ʿImrān" (3:33). For Mary: "O Mary, God has chosen you" (3:42). Choice takes the form of distinction, but it does not rely on descent or preference of gender, but on a position that summons the choice. For Abraham, verse 2:124 notes: "And when his Lord tested Abraham with words, and he fulfilled them." The test preceded the choice, and the words were fulfilled before he was made an imām. Choice is inseparable from the deed, not the descent.
The rule: the one who turns away from Abraham's way has turned away from a position inseparable from the choice
The milla (way) is not an identity carried by descent, but a support of a prior choice inseparable from a specific deed. Whoever wishes to be in the rank of the chosen must pass by the same path Abraham traversed: the test of the words, then their fulfillment. The choice is the fruit that comes after this, not before.
Relationship to what precedes and follows: Abraham's way as extension of the foundation
The verse comes after the sequence of Abraham's prayer in 125-129, moving the reader from the narration of what Abraham did to his position within what he did. One who reads the context finds that milla in the Qur'an is not an abstract belief, but a path that includes everything Abraham worked: building the House, praying for a muslim community, asking for a messenger from them. Turning away from the way is turning away from all of this.
The verse paves the way for what follows in 2:131-132: "When his Lord said to him: submit (aslim). He said: I submit (aslamtu) to the Lord of all the worlds... and Abraham charged his sons with it." The way in its essential form is islām (handing-over) to the Lord of the worlds, and Abraham charged his sons with it. The arc extending from 130 to 132 discloses the structure of the way: a handing-over from the individual to the Lord of the worlds, then a charge of it to the sons. Whoever turns away from this handing-over or from this charge has turned away from the way and removed himself from its sequence.
The rule that summarizes the arc: Abraham's way is not a separate religion chosen in opposition to others, but a structure that joins handing-over, charge, and the accompanying deed. Whoever wishes to belong to Abraham in truth must enter this structure in both its parts. The Qur'an, in repeating the mention of the milla, reveals that it is open to everyone who comes after Abraham, provided they enter by the same path Abraham entered: test, fulfillment, handing-over, and charge. These conditions do not pass by descent, but by renewed choice in every generation.
