﴾ Those are the signs of God, which We recite to you in truth (bi-l-ḥaqq); and you are indeed among the ones sent. ﴿
"Those" is a pointing at the far and not at the near. The choice is not a turn of style only; it is a structural statement that what was recounted a moment ago is no event standing near the one addressed in time, but something set down in writing before it was ever recited. The signs are recorded in their own place, in the tablet, in the knowledge of God, and the reciting uncovers them; it does not compose them.
"Signs" comes in the plural, and the plural counts three layers of mark in the account just given: the mark of the thousands who went out from their homes wary of death, the mark of the account of Ṭālūt and Dāwūd, and the mark of the law by which God pushes people back, some of them by means of others. Each one is a sign standing on its own, and their gathering is one sign that holds them all. The plural here does not point to the verses of a muṣḥaf; it points to the three marks laid one over the other.
"We recite them to you": natlū, from t-l-w, is a following-on and a joining. One says of a man that he talā another when he walked in his tracks. Reciting, then, is no bare reading; it is a bringing forward in sequence, each mark tied to what came before it and to what will come after it. "We recite them to you" says that the order is measured out, and the one addressed does not choose it.
"In truth" is a constraint that holds the reciting on two sides at once: the side of the matter, its answering to what actually happened, and the side of the aim, its answering to what ought to be taken from it. Two charges are pushed off in this one clause, the charge of legend-making and the charge of rhetorical retouching, and both go down under a single word: bi-l-ḥaqq.
"And you are indeed among the ones sent" does not say "you are the messenger"; it says "you are of the company". The min is partitive, and it sets the one addressed inside a line of messengers who went before. The position is decisive: the account just told is no report about other people, it is the account of one house, and the one addressed belongs to it. Those who went out from their homes, those who crossed the river, those who stood firm before Jālūt, all of them are in the one line at whose end the last one sent is standing.
So the word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity: the role of "reciting in truth" precedes the role of historical reporting, and the role of "belonging among the ones sent" precedes any claim to a singular standing of one's own in the message.
A short verse that settles three matters at one stroke. "Those" points at the far and not at the near: what was recounted is no event standing close in time to the one addressed, it is set down in its own place before the reciting. "The signs of God" in the plural counts three layers of mark in the account just given: the mark of the thousands in flight (243), the account of Ṭālūt and Dāwūd (246 to 251), and the law by which God pushes people back (251). "We recite them", from t-l-w, is a following-on and a joining to what went before, not a bare reading; a man talā another when he walked in his tracks, and the one addressed does not choose the order. "In truth", from ḥ-q-q, is a constraint that pushes off two charges together, the charge of legend-making and the charge of rhetorical retouching. "And you are indeed among the ones sent": the partitive min sets the one addressed in a line and not in a place of his own. Those who went out from their homes, those who crossed the river, those who held their ground before Jālūt, all of them stand in the very line at whose end the last one stands. The account is not about other people; it is the account of one house.
