Commentary
"And [recall] when We split the sea for you, then delivered you and drowned Pharaoh's people while you were looking on."
"We split the sea for you," from the root f-r-q. It has become clear that the root is built from f (separation and penetration), r (repetition and flow) and q (cutting and firmness). So farq is a separation that stretches and cuts. The bi- of bikum, "for you," carries cause and means: you are the ones by whose crossing the sea was made to part. The sea was not split first and you brought into it afterwards; your crossing was made the splitting itself.
"Then delivered you," from n-j-w. As set out earlier, deliverance, najāt, is a coming out of a depth that settles into a higher safety. The fa-, "then," is here a particle of immediate sequence: no gap of time is left between the splitting and the rescue, as if the two were a single event divided across two verbs.
"And drowned Pharaoh's people," from gh-r-q. Drowning, gharaq, is a fall that turns around the one falling until it encloses him. The very water that became a wall for those who went first became an enclosure for those who came after. This contrast within a single act shows that one and the same matter answers two different commands when those who carry it differ.
"While you were looking on," from n-ẓ-r. Looking, naẓar, is sight cast from the centre of the eye onto the thing seen. The circumstantial clause wa-antum tanẓurūn fixes the witness: the deliverance was not news brought after a lapse of time but a scene lived by those it concerned. And from here the argument against them is more decisive, should they forget.
The verse sets out in detail the working of the deliverance that the verse before it gave in brief: "We split the sea for you." The bi- of bikum is precise: the splitting came about by reason of you and through you, so you are not a passive object acted upon but a part of the working of the wonder. Then the particle of immediate sequence in "then delivered you": no gap is left between the splitting and the rescue. And the wording "and drowned Pharaoh's people" carries a double sense: the one water was a wall for those who were saved and an enclosure for those who drowned, which means that the very same matter answers two different commands when those who carry it differ. And the close, "while you were looking on," fixes the rescued community as a witness: a community that saw the end with its own eyes and then became the community founded on the memory of that sight. The rescue here is not a still mercy but a charge to bear witness: He rescued you so that you would be witnesses.
Commentaire
Common reading
Remember when We split the sea for you, rescued you, and drowned Pharaoh's people as you watched.
A root-reading
Faraqnā bikum = a cut traveling from centre to extent through you yourselves (ف+ر+ق). Anjaynākum = lifted you up to safety (ن+ج+و). Aghraqnā = sank them into an encircling deep (غ+ر+ق). Tanẓurūn = sight projecting from the centre of the eye (ن+ظ+ر).
Note: splitting and drowning are opposite acts; the water served as the single instrument of both.
Lecture courante
Interpretation
First: what the letters say
The root (f r q) is a separation that begins, extends, and ends in a sharp boundary between two sides. The bāʾ in «bikum» is causal-instrumental: the passing through itself is the separation. The root (n j w) is an exit from a pit settling at safety. The root (gh r q) is concealment that extends in depth then completes itself with a closed boundary. The root (n ẓ r) is the projection of a visual ray extending from the center of the eye to what is seen. Opposed actions, in the same matter, in the same instant.
Second: the scene
The addressees were ordered to recall a scene their own eyes had witnessed: the sea split through their crossing, not before their crossing, so they were rescued, and Pharaoh's people were drowned. The phrasing «bikum» makes the community a part of the mechanism of the miracle, not a spectator before it. The scene closed with a circumstantial clause: «and you were there, looking on.» The witness is recorded in the eyes of the speaker.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This structure recurs whenever a single situation gathers two opposed paths distinguished not by external situation but by what the traveler carries. The fleeing and the pursuing pass through the same place at the same time, but the matter of the place responds to what each traveler carries inwardly. What hope and longing carry opens the way; what tyranny and the will to seize carry closes it down. This is not a psychological metaphor, it is a structure that occurs in the place itself.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The phrasing ﴿فَرَقْنَا بِكُمُ الْبَحْرَ﴾ uses in Arabic the word baḥr, which covers large bodies of water of every kind: wide rivers, lakes, extensive marshlands, and coastal seas alike. The English word sea is narrower; it shifts the meaning straight to an open coastal expanse and pushes the reader toward one specific image. The Arabic does not require this. The word opens the field to several kinds of water-body and does not commit to any one.
The phrasing also gathers two opposite outcomes into one situation: ﴿فَأَنجَيْنَاكُمْ وَأَغْرَقْنَا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ﴾. One material, one moment, one event whose effect inverts: rescue for one party, drowning for the other. This is the structure of a phenomenon with a temporal window: a place that opens a passage for whoever enters it at the right time, and closes over whoever follows. The traditional picture of two great walls of water is one image of this structure; another, equally compatible, is a hydrological window such as a seasonal flood-recession that reveals a passage and then takes it back. The text opens these images and does not commit to one. What it specifies is the doubling of outcome from a single material, not the physical image itself.
As for the specific geographic location, that question stays open in the frame set at 2:49. The verse here does not name a specific place, but it does name something else: that the people of Pharaoh, the instruments of branding and slaughter in the previous verse, were dispatched in a single event recorded in the eyes of the rescued community. ﴿وَأَنتُمْ تَنظُرُونَ﴾ fixes the testimony in seeing before any narrative, the very structure that historical anthropology, with Jan Assmann, calls founding collective memory: communities form around events they have witnessed with their own eyes far more strongly than around events they have only heard about. The attribution in ﴿فَرَقْنَا﴾ and ﴿وَأَغْرَقْنَا﴾ to the first-person plural of the divine speaker carries the act out of the pursuing king's design and out of any geographic accident, into the One who joined the conduct of both groups to the structure of the place at one and the same time.
La formulation rassemble aussi en une seule situation deux issues opposées : ﴿فَأَنجَيْنَاكُمْ وَأَغْرَقْنَا آلَ فِرْعَوْنَ﴾.
