﴾ Do not suppose, regarding those who rejoice in what they brought and love to be praised for what they did not do, do not suppose them safe from the punishment. For them is a painful punishment. ﴿
"Do not suppose" opens with a prohibition addressed to a hearer in the singular, and the verb carries the letter of emphasis. The object of the supposing is a relative whose clauses follow one another, and its people are identified by two acts, not by a name or a descent. The first is "those who rejoice in what they brought": a plural imperfect whose joy is tied, through the preposition, to the relative that sums up what they brought. Joy, from f-r-ḥ, is a narrow opening that flows and then contains its trace within, so that it appears as an expansion in movement. The prohibition bears on the whole structure that follows: a joy in what was brought and a love of praise for what was not done, gathered in one described subject.
The conjunction adds the second clause: "and love." The object of that love is an infinitive drawn from "to be praised," and the verb is passive, so the object of the desire is the occurrence of praise itself, from whatever quarter it comes. Praise, from ḥ-m-d, is a narrowing that contains, then holds within and fixes under pressure, and it carries a commendation bound to the one praised. The preposition that follows, however, discloses where the break lies: "for what they did not do." The negation removes the act and gives the imperfect the value of a perfect. The act, from f-ʿ-l, is a passage that opens a course toward emergence out of depth and then attaches to its place; the negation cuts off its occurrence, while the demand for praise for it remains.
The consequence particle comes after the two clauses are complete and takes up the same prohibition with emphasis: "do not suppose them." The plural pronoun gathers the group described, and the preposition brings them into "safe from the punishment" by way of the forbidden supposing. Safety, from f-w-z, is a piercing crossing that goes on until it passes whatever stands in its way and reaches what it seeks, and so it carries a place of winning or of escape. The negation here is the ruling completed after their joy in what they brought and their love of praise for what they did not do, rather than a statement detached from the two clauses. It falls on the safety itself: it brings the supposing down from its root, not from its edge.
The conjunction adds a fronted prepositional phrase: "for them." The pronoun refers to the very people just described, and the postponed subject, "a punishment," is indefinite and qualified as "painful." Having forbidden that they be supposed safe from the punishment, the speech establishes for them a punishment that carries pain. The qualification alone carries the weight of the punishment, a limit that falls, then clings, then closes; it describes the punishment that seizes, not the one it seizes. The repetition of "the punishment" and then "a punishment" is effaced neither by a pronoun nor by an image: the first is that from which safety is denied, and the second is fixed for them and bound to the quality of pain.
The verse builds its category from two precise relations: they rejoice in what they brought, and they love to be praised for what they did not do. These two clauses alone carry the definition: a joy, and a love of praise. An emphatic prohibition against supposing surrounds them, and it returns once the relation is complete, to forbid counting them in an escape from the punishment. The nominal affirmation seals the course with a painful punishment that falls to them. Three balances face one another within the words: a joy in what was brought, a praise sought for what was not done, and a denied safety replaced by a fixed punishment qualified by pain.
