﴾ And when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Book: you shall certainly make it clear to the people and shall not conceal it. But they cast it behind their backs and purchased with it a small price. Miserable is what they purchase. ﴿
The conjunction attaches the adverbial "when" and calls up the time of a completed act: Allah took. The agent is named, and the object, "the covenant", is joined to a relative defined by its own clause: those who were given the Book. Covenant, from w-th-q, is an enclosure that gathers with density and then knots in the depth, and it carries a tightly bound pledge. The passive "were given" establishes that the Book reached them, and the construct then ties the covenant directly to that relation: the giving of the Book comes accompanied by a pledge taken and bound tight.
The lām and the emphatic nūn reinforce the verb "you shall certainly make it clear", and the attached pronoun is an object referring to the nearest antecedent, the Book. Clarifying, from b-y-n, is an opening that brings what is within out to the surface, carried by the yāʾ until the visible thing stands apart from what surrounds it, and the doubled yāʾ in "you shall make it clear" resumes the clarifying whenever the people need it: it is a work taken up again, not an announcement made once after which the charge would lapse. The lām in "to the people" makes the people, in their generality, the recipients of this clarifying. The conjunction then adds a negation: and you shall not conceal it. Concealment, from k-t-m, is a thing held by a fine pressure and kept within an inside that contains it. Taken together, the two close both roads of failure: leaving the clarifying undone, and the act of hiding.
The particle marks immediate sequence; the plural wāw refers to those whose pledge was taken, and the attached pronoun to what was laid upon them. Casting, from n-b-dh, is an inner containment that connects and then passes through sharply, and it carries a throwing that sets the thing far from the place where it was held. The adverbial fixes its direction: behind their backs. "Backs" is a plural joined to their pronoun, so the adverbial assigns the direction to their own bodies: what stood before them as a charge has come to lie behind them as a thing discarded. The contrast is plain in the text: a covenant taken so that it would be made clear and not concealed, and then that same pronoun cast backward.
The conjunction adds another completed verb: they purchased. The bāʾ in "with it" brings the pronoun into the exchange, and "a price" is an object qualified as small. The particle then introduces the formula of blame, "miserable", while "what" takes in the object of the judgment, and the imperfect "they purchase" presents the act as a state that renews itself, after the completed "they purchased". Smallness and blame judge the transaction at both its ends: a small return, and an act on which the judgment of misery is renewed.
The verse calls up a covenant that Allah took from those who were given the Book: to make it clear to the people with a clarity reinforced and sustained over time, and not to conceal it. It then presents three successive steps in one single sequence: the pronoun cast behind the backs, the purchase that exchanges it for a small price, and the blame of what they purchase. The Book, the price and those who act remain within the bounds of the words that defined them, so it is the covenant, the casting and the purchase that carry the judgment. In this way the order of the sentences produces its own balance: the covenant tightened at the outset, then set aside behind the back, then replaced by something small, then a judgment that names the gain a miserable purchase, without weighing it in the buyers' own terms.
