Commentary
Walking itself is not what is forbidden. Maraḥan is an accusative that describes the bearing of the one walking, so the prohibition falls on what goes along with the step, not on the step itself: without the circumstantial accusative, the walking stays permitted as it was.
Mashy (m-sh-y) is a going-through that runs on and moves softly, a continuous passage with no leap in it. Maraḥ (m-r-ḥ) is a light running-on that goes out and is not held back. A fine edge divides the two words: walking runs on and stays governed, while exultation runs on and keeps nothing of itself in reserve, a bearing that spends what it does not own.
"The earth" returns in the second sentence after standing in the first, though in the first it is the container that is walked in, and in the second an object that does not open. The word is one and the position differs: you move within it, and you do not pass through it.
Kharq (kh-r-q) is a piercing that runs and is then released as a cut, that is, a going-through that opens matter by severing it; lan is a negation stretched out over what is to come. The subject of the verb is you, not the earth. So the verse reports of you that you are not the one who tears it, not of the earth that it cannot be torn open; the limit is attributed to the walker, not described in the soil.
The second sentence is built like the first: lan a second time, you as the subject a second time, and the mountains as what is to be reached. Bulūgh (b-l-gh) is a contact that clings, then comes through out of a depth and shows at its end point, so it is an arrival at a limit, rather than a mere drawing near.
Then comes ṭūlan, an accusative of specification that confines the direction of the reaching. So the negation does not deny arriving at the mountains on foot; mountains are reached by the foot. What it denies is matching them in height, and ṭūl (ṭ-w-l) is a covering that clings to its place and extends over it unbroken until it reaches far: the measure is a stature, not a distance.
Two limits, then: an earth you do not pass through, and a stature you do not reach, with your own stature standing between them. Exultation is a bearing that walks as though the first opened for the foot and the second fell short of the head; the verse returns both limits to their place, and the step is left at its own measure.
A single circumstantial accusative, "exulting," carries the whole prohibition. The walking remains; what is removed from it is only the bearing of a running-on that does not hold itself back. The walker is then set between two limits that are attributed to him, for the subject in both verbs is "you": "you will not tear" and "you will not reach." Below is ground that does not open for your foot, above is a height your stature does not reach, and the earth comes back across the two sentences, once as the container you walk in and once as an object you do not pass through. Ṭūlan is a specification that keeps the negation from being read as a denial of distance: mountains are reached by climbing, and are not matched in stature. So the step that forgets the two limits is returned by the verse to what lies between them, where it actually stands.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as a prohibition of arrogance and swagger in one's gait, and the two clauses that follow are read as a deflation of the arrogant: you are weak, you cannot split the earth with your tread nor rival the mountains with your frame, so why swell.
A reading that turns the second half into a rebuke measuring human weakness.
A root-reading
Maraḥan is an accusative of state, so the prohibition falls on the bearing and not on the walking. Mashy (m-sh-y) is a running-on that carries smoothly; maraḥ (m-r-ḥ) is a light running-on that goes out unheld. Then two limits are set, and in both verbs the subject is you: "you will not tear open," "you will not reach." Kharq (kh-r-q) is a piercing that opens matter by severing it; bulūgh (b-l-gh) is an arrival that ends at a limit and shows there; and ṭūlan (ṭ-w-l) is an accusative of specification restricting the reaching to the direction of standing extension. The verse describes neither the earth nor the mountains: it bounds the walker below and above, and leaves his step between them.
A reading that hears two limits attributed to the walker himself, not a report about soil and summits.
The two readings do not conflict. The first hears the rebuke; the second reads in the two occurrences of lan, and in the specifying ṭūlan, that both limits are properties of the one walking rather than of what he walks on. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
The whole prohibition is carried by a single accusative of state: "exulting." Strip it and the walking stands as it was. No road and no step is refused; what is refused is a bearing the walker walks with. And a bearing is something a body does with itself, not something laid in the ground before it.
Then two limits, and in both verbs the subject is you. It does not say that the earth cannot be torn or that the mountains are high; it says "you will not tear the earth open" and "you will not reach the mountains in height." The report is about the walker, not about what he walks on. Then "in height" comes and restricts the direction: mountains are reached by the foot and are not matched by a frame. The measure taken is a body, not a distance.
And "the earth" arrives twice in two positions. Once as what you walk inside, once as an object you do not get through. One word placed twice, and between the two placings lies the whole human range: a below that does not open, an above that is not reached, and between them a step at its own size.
Perhaps there is something to be heard in the attributing of both limits to the walker himself. What changes in the history of people is not the body but what is made so that the body may extend in the two directions: a tool that takes it under the ground, a structure that raises it above its own head. It may be that hanging the negation on the one addressed rather than on the soil and the peaks points to the limit being set in the stature and not in the world, since a person standing alone with no instrument still comes back to what lies between his sole and his head. And perhaps there is a second listening in the choice of height rather than distance: distance yields to the step and to whatever carries the step, while a stature measured against a stature does not yield. This is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse forbade a bearing and set two limits on the one who walks, and it settled nothing about the description of the earth or the mountains or of what hands build.
Tadabbur
