Commentary
The verse says neither "do not speak" nor "do not suppose"; it says lā taqfu. The tracking, from q-f-w, is a held pressure that runs through a single channel and is then tied back to what came before it: setting a foot where a foot was set before it. From it comes qafā, the back of the neck, what is walked behind and never seen.
So what is forbidden is a movement, not a sentence, and that is why the verse reaches what is never uttered at all: the supposition is followed in silence as it is followed in speech, and the foot moves in the track before the tongue says anything. Whoever forbids speech has stopped the tongue; whoever forbids tracking has stopped the leg.
The verse does not say "what is not known"; it says "what is not yours." The lām is the lām of ownership, and the bi of "of it" fastens the knowledge to the particular thing. So what is negated is a knowledge attributed to the addressee himself about this thing itself, not a knowledge in the world.
This overturns the scale: the matter may well be known to someone else while the addressee's tracking of it remains forbidden, because he has not taken hold of it. Knowledge, from ʿ-l-m, is a grip that fuses and then gathers and clings, so it is a holding, not a hearing. It does not suffice that the thing be known to someone; what suffices is that it be his own.
After the prohibition comes inna, which gives the ground and makes it firm. Three are then counted out, made definite by the article, each one singular and standing on its own name: the hearing, the sight, and the inner chamber. These are precisely the instruments of tracking: an ear that takes the report falling on it, an eye that goes out to the trail and lands on it, and a hollow that settles the matter, so that one walks on or halts.
The order, too, can be read. The hearing, from s-m-ʿ, is a narrow channel that holds what comes down into it and then brings it up out of a depth: it receives without choosing. The sight, from b-ṣ-r, is a contact that pierces and extends out to a thing seen: it goes out and aims. The inner chamber, fuʾād from f-ʾ-d, is a split, pressed, fixed place in which whatever entered is turned over until it is done. The report comes in by the first, the trail is sought by the second, and the walking is settled by the third.
This point is not to be passed over. "Those" is a pointer set for a company of beings who reason, and here it falls upon a hearing, a sight and an inner chamber. So the verse points at the limbs as one points at a people standing present and called by their names.
The predicate then comes back singular: "is asked about." The plural is pointed at as beings who reason are pointed at, and then it is taken one by one. So the senses are not questioned as a bundle, with the liability shared out among them; each one is stood up on its own. The asking, from s-ʾ-l, is a piercing that goes out unattached and then fastens upon whoever holds the answer, and "about it" makes each one the object of the demand rather than a witness to it.
The prohibition falls on a movement rather than on an utterance: lā taqfu halts the foot in the track, so that the supposition kept silent falls under it as the one spoken aloud does. The limit of the ban is drawn with the lām of ownership, "what you have no knowledge of," so the whole turns on what the addressee himself holds about this thing itself, not on what is known at large. Then the three instruments by which a trail is tracked are named: a hearing that takes what falls upon it, a sight that goes out to what it aims at, and an inner chamber that settles the matter, so that one walks on or halts. The three are pointed at with "those," the pointer for beings who reason, and then it is said "is asked about," in the singular. The limb that carried a person into the track stands alone where the one who answers for himself is made to stand.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"Do not taqfu" is read as a prohibition of speaking without knowledge: do not testify to what you did not see, do not claim to have heard what you did not hear, do not throw an accusation on a guess. The three named are read as senses a person will be questioned about on the Day of Standing, that is, questioned about what he did with them.
A reading that confines the prohibition to testimony, slander and the passing on of reports.
A root-reading
Taqfu (q-f-w): a pressure running through a single channel and then tied back to what precedes it, that is, setting the foot in an existing track. The prohibition falls on a movement, so it takes in what is never voiced as well as what is said. "You have no knowledge of it": a possessive la- and a specifying bi-, so the measure is what you hold about this; and ʿilm (ʿ-l-m) is a grip that clings and adheres. Then the instruments of tracking are named: samʿ (s-m-ʿ), a narrow channel that holds and brings up from a depth; baṣar (b-ṣ-r), a piercing contact extended toward a target; fuʾād (f-ʾ-d), a split, pressed, fixed hollow that brings what entered to doneness. Ulāʾika, the pointer for beings who reason, falls on them; then "was asked about" comes back singular, so they are taken one at a time.
A reading that hears a prohibition on walking, and the instruments of walking summoned as those who answer for themselves.
The two readings do not conflict. The first holds the tongue; the second holds the foot before it, and reads in ulāʾika that the limb has been set in the place of the one who is questioned. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

The prohibition falls on the foot and not on the tongue. "Do not track" halts a walking in an existing trail, and that walking happens in silence just as it happens aloud. The one who says nothing and goes on down the track is inside the prohibition, and silence takes nobody out of it. Had speech been what was forbidden, the path would have stayed open for as long as the tongue stayed still.
Then the limit is drawn with a possessive. It does not say "what is not known." It says "what you have no knowledge of." The scale is what you hold about this thing in particular, not what is known among people. And what someone else knows does not walk in your legs.
Then three are named in an order that can be read: "the hearing, the sight and the inner chamber." An ear that receives what falls into it and does not choose, an eye that goes out toward what it aims at, and an inward hollow that settles the matter. These are the instruments of tracking themselves, arranged in the order of the step. Then the pointer kept for beings who reason falls on them, "every one of those," and the predicate comes back singular. A company pointed at as if present, and then each one stood up alone.
Perhaps there is something to be heard in the order of the three when it is set beside what is investigated about human perception. A report comes down into a channel that does not choose what enters it; then the eye goes out and hardly looks for anything but what confirms what came down; then the inward hollow settles, and its owner supposes he is only now beginning. It may be that this accounts for the prohibition falling on the movement rather than on the sentence: by the time a tongue speaks, the three have already run, and the point at which a foot might still have been kept out of the track has passed. And perhaps there is a second listening in the pointer of reasoning beings: a person can hardly say which of the three carried him to what he has settled on, so they are addressed as though they held their own affair. This is a conjecture offered as such and not loaded onto the verse, for the verse forbade a tracking, named three, and made each one the subject of the demand, and it settled nothing about the description of what runs in a person until he is certain of what he is certain of.
