The word before the term: a reading that begins from the letters, not from what later settled on them.
❋ ❋ ❋
A tested linguistic framework, applied verse by verse.
01 · Why This Book Exists
The word is hidden beneath the term
The Qur'an is Arabic words written to be read. But most readings today skim over the word and rush to the term that settled on it centuries later, a term built up by schools and centuries, which then becomes what is taught to the Muslim as the word's meaning. This book does the opposite: it stops at the word, listens to its letters, before the term arrives with a ready-made answer.
"Taqwā", before it became a juridical term, was four letters spoken: tāʾ, then qāf, then wāw, then yāʾ. The letters themselves reveal the meaning to anyone who listens. That is what we do here.
02 · The Linguistic Foundation
What this work rests on
This book does not invent a new linguistic theory from scratch. It rests on an empirical study of the Arabic tongue that synthesizes seven contemporary Arabic scholarly traditions, tests them against a complete lexicon, and contributes five new structural findings of its own: the universal dual-face structure of letter charges, a 12-mode operative grammar for trilateral roots, and a four-bar rubric for verifying cross-linguistic cognates.
قر = precision that repeats, a settling that returns to itself.
3
Add the remaining letters
Each new letter modifies the nucleus; it does not erase it.
+ أ affirms the precise repetition, + ن announces it outward.
4
Read the literal word
The literal meaning composes upward.
al-Qur'ān = a precise settling that repeats, is affirmed, and is announced outward.
5
Connect to the Qur'anic usage
One sentence linking letter to verse.
This is why it is called al-Qur'ān: a text that settles on itself, repeats on the tongues, is affirmed in the hearts, and is announced openly to the people.
04 · The Disciplines
Five rules that govern every reading
The linguistic framework is given. But applying it to the Qur'an demands disciplines that keep the reader from slipping into a claim the text does not carry. These five:
⊕
The root before the form
We decompose the word to its root charge first, then add what the form (wazn) modifies. The form modulates; it does not create. This blocks hanging the meaning on a form without its root.
∞
Cumulative reading
Each new occurrence of a word adds a charge; it does not cancel earlier ones. Meaning accumulates across the Mushaf, so the word in Fātiḥah carries what its later places added to it.
⊜
Tadabbur, not taʾwīl
We trace what the verse carries with it: patterns, connections, consequences (﴿will they not reflect upon the Qurʾān?﴾, 4:82). But where the verse ultimately lands is its taʾwīl, and ﴿none knows its taʾwīl save God﴾ (3:7). We do not cross that line.
ع
The Qur'an is Arabic
Every word in the Mushaf, including proper names (Ibrāhīm, ʿĪsā, Jibrīl), is read through its Arabic letters. We do not borrow Hebrew or Greek etymologies to explain an Arabic text.
∅
No claim about what was not said
We do not name what the verse did not name, nor extract what the verse did not signify. We say "the root carries", "the context reveals", "the verse bears", not "the verse means" or "the intended sense is".

Arabic readers also see a fourth tab, 🌳 Root Analysis, which is Arabic-only because it depends on the ear of the Arabic tongue.
06 · A Critical Stance
What this book does not claim
It does not claim that common translations are wrong, nor that root-reading is the last word. What it offers is another way of reading.
Nor is this work attached to any school. Reading from the root is a neutral linguistic practice; any reader can review it for themselves: the letters are known and the rules are fixed.
And finally: this book does not quarrel with any traditional understanding, nor call for its rejection. It asks only for a second reading: to take the word again as it was before a term settled over it.
This book is an invitation to listen
Whoever opens the Qur'an for the first time, or has known it for years and wants to read it differently, is welcome here.

﴾ Clear of all that clings is the One who made His servant journey by night, from the sacred place of prostration to the furthest place of prostration, whose surroundings We have blessed, so that We might show him some of Our signs. He is the One who hears, the One who sees. ﴿
The verse opens not with its news but with a clearing. Subḥān, from the root s-b-ḥ, is a running that extends, an opening that lets out, and a coming through clean. The swimmer moves through water and carries none of it out with him. Placed first, the word washes the channel before the account runs through it. Whoever hears "clear of all that clings" before hearing "made him journey by night" has nothing left in hand to liken it to.
The verb is asrā, the fourth form of s-r-y. Sarā is to travel by night under one's own motion; asrā is to make another travel. The one who acts is "the One"; the one carried is not the one who walked. And the root itself is a hidden running that extends and closes over without an audible footfall, so the concealment of the movement is itself borne along. A single letter at the head of the verb settles the whole matter: this is a journey whose traveller owns not one step of it.
The verse does not name him. It says "His servant" and stops. That is the verse's own choice, and the reading stops where it stopped. The description it selects for the highest station it contains is servanthood: ʿ-b-d, a grip out of the depth that clings to its direction and settles there. A road is called muʿabbad when it has been trodden until it lies smooth under whoever passes. The same root returns two verses on, "a servant much thankful", and again after that, "servants of Ours". Where a listener waits for a name, the verse sets down a relation.
Laylan is indefinite: a part of a night, not a whole one. The root l-y-l is a clinging that stretches out softly until it wraps what lies beneath it, so night here is a cover let down rather than an absence of light. A covered movement, in a covering time, and the measure taken of that time is cut, not spread.
Two ends and a distance between them, bounded by "from" and "to", and of what lies between the verse says nothing at all. Both ends are a place of prostration: s-j-d is a flowing that gathers in a space and comes to rest at its lowest point. The first end is described as ḥarām, from ḥ-r-m, a strictness that surrounds a thing and guards it without coming loose; the second as aqṣā, from q-ṣ-w, the reaching of the furthest edge. Neither is called by a name of its own. Each is identified by what it does.
And the blessing is around it, not in it. Ḥawl, from ḥ-w-l, is a turning that closes upon a centre and comes back to where it began, so what the verse calls blessed is a ring and not a point. One word keeps the place from being told what it was not told. The pronouns shift here too: the verse begins in the third person, "the One who made him journey", then the first person enters three times over, "We have blessed", "that We might show him", "Our signs", and then the verse returns to the third person to close.
The purpose is stated outright, and it is sight: "so that We might show him some of Our signs." Not a raising, not a climbing, not an arrival at a station. Nuriyahu is the fourth form once more: he was made to travel and he was made to see, twice standing where the one acted upon stands. And min takes a portion: some of the signs, not the signs. Twice in one verse the gift is measured out. A sign, from ʾ-y-y, is a mark that points past itself, so the journey ends at pointers rather than at what they point to.
The purpose was a showing; the close is "the One who hears, the One who sees." The close answers the purpose instead of trailing behind it: the One who set up the showing is Himself the Seeing, and no faculty He lacked was borrowed for the occasion. Hearing stands beside it because the verse holds both: something seen there, and an account recited and heard here. The verse opens with a clearing and closes with two names, and what lies between them is guarded against addition.
A verse that reports the largest thing reportable and, in every word, holds itself back from adding to it. It puts a relation where a name was expected, cuts the night down to a part, sets the blessing around and not inside, and calls the whole purpose a looking.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as an account of the Prophet's night journey: "His servant" is identified with him, "the furthest place of prostration" with one specific known site, and the well-known transmitted reports of that night are joined to the verse. Rendered: "Glory to Him who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa."
A reading that identifies the one carried and the place reached, and completes the account from what was handed down around it.
A root-reading
The verse builds its report out of choices that read themselves. Subḥān (s-b-ḥ): a running that opens and comes through clean, so a clearing precedes the news. Asrā is the fourth form: the travelling is borne, not performed. "His servant" is a relation and not a name, and it is the highest description the verse holds. Laylan is indefinite: it takes a part of a night and does not reach the end of one. The blessing is "around it" (ḥ-w-l: a circuit that surrounds and returns), not in it. The purpose is stated outright, "so that We might show him some of Our signs," a showing, with min taking a portion. And the close, "the One who hears, the One who sees," answers a purpose that was sight.
A reading that halts where the verse spoke, and leaves silent what the verse left silent.
The two readings do not conflict. The first identifies and completes; the second counts what the wording actually holds and stops there. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
﴾ And We brought Moses the Book, and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel: that you take no keeper of your affair short of Me. ﴿
The verb is ātaynā, a causative built on a-t-y, the root of coming. With the causative prefix it means: We made it come. The Book was not reached for and not earned; it arrived, and all the motion in the clause belongs to the giver.
At the far end of the verse stands a second verb of getting: tattakhidhū, "you take for yourselves." Two verbs of acquisition in one verse. One descends toward you; toward the other you put out your hand. The whole verse turns on that pair.
And the giving is not the end of it. A second act follows: "and We made it a guidance." Jaʿl, from j-ʿ-l, is the setting of a thing into a place that holds it, so that a state becomes its own. Being a Book is one thing; being a guidance is something done to it afterward. Had a Book guided merely by being a Book, the second verb would have nothing to do. And the guidance is indefinite, "a guidance," not the whole of it, and the lām in "for the Children of Israel" is a lām of direction: a channel cut toward a people. A cut channel is of no use to whoever does not walk in it.
Then the sentence turns. Everything to this point was report: We brought, We made, the Children of Israel. Now it addresses someone present: "that you take." And the speaker's pronoun turns with it, from the plural of ātaynā and jaʿalnāhu to the singular of dūnī, "short of Me." Plural where the giving is; singular where the exclusiveness is. One letter settles what long sentences cannot.
"Take" here is a reflexive form of a-kh-dh: a pulling of something out of its place and into your own hold. And min dūnī names a direction rather than a person: dūn is what falls short of the goal and lies before it. So the prohibition falls on the direction the keeper is sought from, not on having someone to whom your affair is committed. The word wakīl itself carries neither praise nor blame; the root names a bearer, the one to whom a matter is handed over so that he stands in it for its owner. The verse does not forbid entrusting. It forbids installing the bearer in the space short of God.
A Book that came without being reached for; a guidance made of it by a second act; and then, out of report and into your face, the first content of that guidance: know in which direction you hand yourself over. What falls short of the goal cannot carry you, being carried itself.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as a report: a Book given to Moses and made a guidance for his people. "That you take no keeper" is read either as a quotation of what the Book enjoined, or as a turn toward the listeners of the moment. Wakīl is glossed as "lord," "surety," or "manager," and the verse is taken as establishing that entrusting belongs to God alone.
A reading that settles on the general sense and passes lightly over the turn of address and the turn of pronoun.
A root-reading
Ātaynā (a-t-y): a coming caused from the giver's side, answered at the end of the verse by tattakhidhū (a-kh-dh, reflexive form): a pulling into your own hold. Jaʿalnāhu (j-ʿ-l): a setting that makes a state stick, so there are two acts and not one. "A guidance" is indefinite, and the lām of "for the Children of Israel" is a lām of direction. Dūn is what falls short of the goal and lies before it; "a keeper" is indefinite under a prohibition and so covers every instance; and the root w-k-l names a bearer, praised or blamed by nothing in itself. The speaker's pronoun moves from plural to singular exactly at the point of exclusiveness. The verse becomes: a gift that descended and was then made a guidance, and the first thing in that guidance is a prohibition on the direction of entrusting, not on entrusting itself.
A reading that hears two opposed verbs of getting, and a prohibition that lands on a direction rather than on an act.
The two readings do not conflict. The first rests on the sense; the second hears, in the verbs and the particles, the shape of a descending gift and a reached-for taking. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
﴾ Offspring of those We carried with Noah. He was a servant, and full of thanks. ﴿
The verse does not name those it addresses. It names them by what they were scattered from: "offspring of those We carried." Dhurriyya, from dh-r-r, is the strewing of fine particles out of the mass they belonged to. The addressed are identified by a source they were scattered from, not by a land and not by a century.
And the source itself is left open. Those carried are called man, "those who," the widest word for leaving a referent unspecified. One name is given in this verse, and only one. Everyone else is left as "those who." A verse that names so sparingly is teaching its reader where to stop.
"We carried" has its subject stated: it is the speaker. The verse does not say they boarded, and does not say they escaped by any device of their own. It says they were carried, and the carrier it names is the One speaking. Ḥ-m-l is the taking up of a weight and holding it off the ground by the strength of the one who bears it: the load is still and the power belongs to another. The first thing said about this people is that their survival was a being-carried. And maʿa is a particle of accompaniment, not of containment: they are with Noah, not inside anything. What the verse names is the company; whoever adds a vessel has carried something the verse did not carry.
The closing pronoun, "he was," admits more than one referent, and the verse settles neither. The nearest named is Noah, and the sentence is then praise of him. But man, "those who," is itself singular in form, so the pronoun can return to the carried and praise them. Both stand in the grammar of the verse; deciding between them is an addition to it.
And "a servant" brings back the word the Surah opened with, ﴿بِعَبْدِهِ﴾, "His servant." The description chosen there for the highest station appears here as the description of the one praised. It is the same word in both places, neither reduced nor inflated. Then shakūr, a form of intensity, which makes a description into a settled habit rather than an occasion: not one who gave thanks once, but one whose thanks is a standing state. Servanthood and thanks arrive as one pair of words. Whoever knows he was carried finds nothing of his own to boast of, and nothing left to do but thank.
One name is spoken and the rest are left as "those who." The people addressed are defined by having been carried, and the verse ends on a pronoun it declines to settle. A carried thing that gives thanks: that is all the verse hands over, and it is enough.
Commentaire
Two Readings
Common reading
"Offspring of those We carried with Noah" is read as a call, or as standing in for "the Children of Israel" in the previous verse, and is joined to the familiar deliverance account, so that a vessel, its passengers and their number come with it. The pronoun in "he was" is most often taken to be Noah alone, and his thanks are described from the same stock of material.
A reading that ties the verse to a scene reported outside it, and settles a pronoun the verse left open.
A root-reading
Dhurriyya (dh-r-r): the strewing of fine matter out of its source, so the addressed are identified by what they branched from. Man, "those who," keeps the carried unnamed. Ḥamalnā (ḥ-m-l): the holding up of a weight by the bearer's strength, and the bearer named in the wording is the speaker; no vessel is mentioned. Maʿa is accompaniment, not containment. The pronoun in "he was" can be Noah, and can be man, which is singular in form; both stand in the construction and nothing in it decides. "A servant" (ʿ-b-d) brings back the Surah's opening word, and shakūr, a form of intensity, makes thanks a standing state rather than an incident.
A reading that stops where the verse stopped: it names what is named, leaves the unnamed unnamed, and declares the pronoun's two possibilities without closing them.
The two readings part over where to stop. The first completes what the verse left silent; the second reads the silence itself as construction rather than gap. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
