﴾ Then say to him a soft saying; it may be that he will recollect, or stand in awe. ﴿
The command before it is a going, and the fāʾ of "then say" follows on at once, leaving no gap between arriving and saying. Between the two verbs no road is mentioned, no length of time, and no asking of leave.
This is the third dual verb in the passage: taniyā, "do not slacken, the two of you," as a prohibition, then idhhabā, "go, the two of you," as a command, then fa-qūlā, "then say."
"To him" fixes the one spoken to by a pronoun that refers back to the name in the verse before, without naming him a second time.
"A saying," qawlan, is an absolute object: it reinforces its own verb and carries the description.
Had a state been meant, the wording would have been "say to him, the two of you being soft." Instead the accusative fell on the verbal noun, and the adjective followed it.
So what is described is what leaves the mouth, not the one who stands behind it: the speech was specified, while the bearing of the speaker was left open.
A saying, in q-w-l, is a sound released from the mouth, cut off, that stretches out and stays attached to its speaker. So what is commanded is something uttered and heard, not something kept hidden within.
The root l-y-n denotes a touching that runs on with no roughness to turn the hand back. In the root, the description belongs first to what is touched and yields without scratching.
It was then carried over to speech. So a soft saying is one that does not turn rough on the hearer as it lands.
The adjective is indefinite, following its noun. The verse does not say which softness, nor how much, and names no limit at which the softness should stop.
What softens the tongue is not mentioned in the verse at all: the description is given, and its cause is withheld.
Laʿalla, "it may be that," is a particle of hoping. It neither reports that a thing happens nor promises it, nor makes it a condition.
So what comes after it is hoped for, not guaranteed, and the command that comes before it is complete whether or not what comes after it happens.
Here is the place to stop: the verse suspends the end and leaves it undecided.
The two ends, "he will recollect, or stand in awe," are joined by aw, "or," not by the wāw. Had the wāw come, the two would have been sought together; aw came, so one of them is enough for the hoping.
"He will recollect," yatadhakkaru, is on the pattern tafaʿʿala, a form of gradual working and effort, not of something that happens all at once.
Its root, dh-k-r, is the root of what the two were forbidden to slacken in, two verses earlier: ﴿وَلَا تَنِيَا فِي ذِكْرِي﴾, "and do not slacken, the two of you, inside My remembrance." There it is a remembrance annexed to the yāʾ of the One who speaks; here it is a recollecting with no annexation and nothing named as recollected.
"Stand in awe," yakhshā, is from kh-sh-y, a piercing that spreads fine through the inside and runs there. The verb is intransitive, with no object, and what he would stand in awe of is left unsaid.
These two words came together at the opening of this Surah: ﴿إِلَّا تَذْكِرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰ﴾, "only as a reminding, for whoever holds in awe." They are two roots in a single order, once in describing what was sent down, and once in the hope of what may happen to the one who is spoken to.
The fāʾ makes the saying follow the going and leaves no gap between them; "then say" is the third dual verb in the passage, after a prohibition and a command; and "to him" is a pronoun that refers back without the name being repeated. "A saying" is an absolute object that carries the adjective, so the description fell on the verbal noun and not on the one who does it: what is said was specified, and the bearing of the one who says it was left open; the root q-w-l is a sound released from the mouth, cut off, that stretches out and stays attached to its speaker. "Soft" is from l-y-n, the description belonging first to touch, to what yields and does not scratch; it came indefinite, with no limit and no measure, and the verse did not mention what softens the tongue, nor why. Laʿalla then is a hoping that neither reports an occurrence nor promises one, so the command is complete before it and the end hangs suspended after it. "He will recollect, or stand in awe" are two ends joined by "or," not by the wāw, so their coming together is not sought; the first is on the pattern tafaʿʿala, from the root of the remembrance the two were forbidden to slacken in, the second is intransitive with no object, and these are the two roots that came together at the opening of the Surah in this very order.
﴾ Puis dites-lui une parole douce ; peut-être se ressouviendra-t-il, ou sera-t-il pris de révérence. ﴿
