The word before the term: a reading that begins from the letters, not from what later settled on them.
❋ ❋ ❋
A tested linguistic framework, applied verse by verse.
01 · Why This Book Exists
The word is hidden beneath the term
The Qur'an is Arabic words written to be read. But most readings today skim over the word and rush to the term that settled on it centuries later, a term built up by schools and centuries, which then becomes what is taught to the Muslim as the word's meaning. This book does the opposite: it stops at the word, listens to its letters, before the term arrives with a ready-made answer.
"Taqwā", before it became a juridical term, was four letters spoken: tāʾ, then qāf, then wāw, then yāʾ. The letters themselves reveal the meaning to anyone who listens. That is what we do here.
02 · The Linguistic Foundation
What this work rests on
This book does not invent a new linguistic theory from scratch. It rests on an empirical study of the Arabic tongue that synthesizes seven contemporary Arabic scholarly traditions, tests them against a complete lexicon, and contributes five new structural findings of its own: the universal dual-face structure of letter charges, a 12-mode operative grammar for trilateral roots, and a four-bar rubric for verifying cross-linguistic cognates.
قر = precision that repeats, a settling that returns to itself.
3
Add the remaining letters
Each new letter modifies the nucleus; it does not erase it.
+ أ affirms the precise repetition, + ن announces it outward.
4
Read the literal word
The literal meaning composes upward.
al-Qur'ān = a precise settling that repeats, is affirmed, and is announced outward.
5
Connect to the Qur'anic usage
One sentence linking letter to verse.
This is why it is called al-Qur'ān: a text that settles on itself, repeats on the tongues, is affirmed in the hearts, and is announced openly to the people.
04 · The Disciplines
Five rules that govern every reading
The linguistic framework is given. But applying it to the Qur'an demands disciplines that keep the reader from slipping into a claim the text does not carry. These five:
⊕
The root before the form
We decompose the word to its root charge first, then add what the form (wazn) modifies. The form modulates; it does not create. This blocks hanging the meaning on a form without its root.
∞
Cumulative reading
Each new occurrence of a word adds a charge; it does not cancel earlier ones. Meaning accumulates across the Mushaf, so the word in Fātiḥah carries what its later places added to it.
⊜
Tadabbur, not taʾwīl
We trace what the verse carries with it: patterns, connections, consequences (﴿will they not reflect upon the Qurʾān?﴾, 4:82). But where the verse ultimately lands is its taʾwīl, and ﴿none knows its taʾwīl save God﴾ (3:7). We do not cross that line.
ع
The Qur'an is Arabic
Every word in the Mushaf, including proper names (Ibrāhīm, ʿĪsā, Jibrīl), is read through its Arabic letters. We do not borrow Hebrew or Greek etymologies to explain an Arabic text.
∅
No claim about what was not said
We do not name what the verse did not name, nor extract what the verse did not signify. We say "the root carries", "the context reveals", "the verse bears", not "the verse means" or "the intended sense is".
05 · The Interface

Reflection

Arabic readers also see a fourth tab, 🌳 Root Analysis, which is Arabic-only because it depends on the ear of the Arabic tongue.
06 · A Critical Stance
What this book does not claim
It does not claim that common translations are wrong, nor that root-reading is the last word. What it offers is another way of reading.
Nor is this work attached to any school. Reading from the root is a neutral linguistic practice; any reader can review it for themselves: the letters are known and the rules are fixed.
And finally: this book does not quarrel with any traditional understanding, nor call for its rejection. It asks only for a second reading: to take the word again as it was before a term settled over it.
This book is an invitation to listen
Whoever opens the Qur'an for the first time, or has known it for years and wants to read it differently, is welcome here.

The verse is two letters. They are read by their own names, each ending in a stop, and then the speech halts. There is no verb in it, no inflected noun, no vocative particle and no one called, nothing predicated of anything.
That by itself is the report. For a text to open with two sound units standing outside the grammar of a sentence is a deliberate halt placed before speech begins. Whoever parses the two letters has parsed what the text left unparsed; whoever unfolds them into a word has joined what the text cut apart. The verse says two letters, and it says nothing more.
What the two letters carry can be read, and only that. Ṭā is a broad, covering closure of the tongue, then a holding and a pressure, then a heavy spreading outward: the tongue flattens wide across its outlet, traps the breath beneath it under pressure, then releases it so that it spreads with its own weight. Hā is the emptying of the chest and the running of an unbroken breath, then a thinning, a fading and a dying away: a channel that opens all of itself with no closure at all, through which what was inside runs out until it goes quiet and nothing of it is left. In sequence: a heavy closure that holds, then an emptying that fades. That is what they carry, and that is the limit of what may be said about them.
One further thing can be seen. The second letter ends in an open lengthening, and the whole Surah rhymes on that same outlet: "that you should suffer," "who stands in awe," "the high ones," "settled even," "the moist earth," "and more hidden," "the most beautiful." A single sound-frame runs from the opening verse and the Surah scarcely leaves it. This is said here once and is not repeated at every verse that ends on it. It may account for the choice of one word over its near neighbours, and that is offered as a possibility, not as a ruling; the rhyme is noticed, and no preference between meanings is built on it.
A verse of two letters: a heavy closure that holds, then an emptying that fades. Everything past that is a space the text left open, and filling it adds to a verse that said only two letters.
Commentaire
﴾ Ṭā. Hā. ﴿

Two Readings
Common reading
The inherited readings of "Ṭā Hā" have differed and never settled on one. It has been said to be a name of the Prophet; it has been said to be a call meaning "O man"; it has been said to be an oath; and it has been said to belong to the disconnected letters, which are not interpreted, their knowledge left to the One who sent them down. In translations it appears as a transliteration with no comment in the main text.
A reading that carries the differing reports and moves past the two letters to what they are taken to stand for.
A root-reading
The verse is two letters with no construction in it: no verb, no inflected noun, no vocative particle. So what the two letters carry in the tongue is read, and the reading stops there. Ṭā is a broad covering closure, a holding under pressure, then a heavy spreading outward. Hā is the emptying of the chest and the running of an unbroken breath, then a thinning, a fading and a dying away. A heavy holding, then an emptying that ends. No name, no call and no added sense is built on the two letters, because the verse builds nothing on them. And it is noted that the second ends in an open lengthening on which the whole Surah rhymes.
A reading that halts where the verse halted, and hears the sound before a meaning is tied to it.
The two readings part over where to stop. The first goes on past the two letters; the second stays with them and reads what is in them. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Commentary
﴾ We have not sent the Qur'an down upon you that you should suffer. ﴿
The negating particle at the head governs a whole clause, not a single word. Everything inside its scope falls under the negation, and the verb is not the only thing inside. The clause is a verb, an object, a preposition with its noun, and then a purpose particle at the end. That last particle stands inside the scope like everything before it. So what is denied is not the sending down; it is a sending down for that end. This is why the next verse comes with an exception that establishes another purpose and does not establish the sending, because the sending was never what the negation touched.
The verb is from n-z-l, a passing out of what was held in until it reaches a place and settles there. From the same root comes the word for a lodging, the place one comes down into and stays. So coming down, at root, is not the passing of something falling; it is its settling where it ended. And the form here is the causative in a single stroke, one undivided act. Two verses further on the same material returns in a form that distributes the act over stages: two forms of one root inside a single opening. And "upon you" is the preposition of coming from above: the descending thing falls, and the one addressed is the ground it falls onto. That is exactly why weight could be imagined here, and why the denial is placed exactly here.
What descends is named. Qurʾān, from q-r-ʾ, is the gathering of what was scattered and then its release as speech: the verb means to draw letters together and bring them out distinct, so reciting is a gathering and then a showing, not the moving of an object from one place to another. The form is one of intensity, a name for what is gathered and voiced. And it stands definite and in the accusative between the verb and its purpose: it is what is carried, not what carries. What came down is known and particular; what was denied is only what it was aimed at.
Then the denied end. Sh-q-w is an effort that tightens and spreads and is then joined to the one who bears it so that it lasts. From it comes the verb for toiling without gain and the noun for hardship bound to the loss of its fruit. There is no mere passing difficulty in the root; there is difficulty that clings to whoever it falls on. And that is precisely what is denied. Effort is not lifted from the one addressed, nor is hardship. What is lifted is that fruitless toil should be the thing for which the Book came down. There is a difference between denying that hardship occurs and denying that it was the aim. Had the point been to deny the toil, the wording would have been "you shall not toil." Instead it is a purpose particle, and a purpose particle does not deny the occurrence; it denies the intent.
The negation reaches the end of the sentence and lands on the purpose particle there. The sending stands; the reason offered for it is what is taken away, and the space left empty is filled by the next verse.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as a consolation to the one addressed and a lifting of burden from him: the Book did not come down to wear him out, and the discussion expands into how much he used to exert himself. "Suffering" is usually glossed as bodily fatigue in standing, so the verse moves from the aim of the sending down to the description of a state being eased.
A reading that shifts the negation from the purpose to the state, and elaborates where the verse did not.
A root-reading
The verse is read from its own particles. The negating mā governs the whole clause, and a purpose particle stands at the clause's end, so what is denied is a sending down for that end, not the sending down. The verb is causative in one undivided stroke, and n-z-l is a passing out of what was held in until it reaches a place and settles there. "Upon you" is the preposition of coming from above, which makes the one addressed the ground of the fall. Qurʾān, from q-r-ʾ, is the gathering of the scattered and its release as speech, in a form of intensity. And sh-q-w is effort joined to its bearer so that it lasts without fruit. Had the toil itself been meant, the wording would have been "you shall not toil"; what is denied is that it was the aim.
A reading that follows the scope of the negation to where it ends, and finds it resting on the purpose particle rather than the verb.
The two readings do not conflict. The first hears a burden lifted; the second fixes exactly what was lifted, and finds it the aim and not the effort. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Commentary
﴾ Only as a reminding, for whoever holds in awe. ﴿
The verse before this one placed a negation on a purpose and not on an act. What stood in the slot of purpose was lifted out, and the slot was left empty. Then the excepting particle comes and fills it. This is not a facing off of opposites. Suffering and reminding are not counterparts in the language: a reminding is not the contrary of toil, and toil is not the contrary of reminding. Had a contrast been meant, what answers hardship would have come, ease or relief. What joins the two is not their meaning but their position. Both stand in the slot of the aim, so what did not belong in that slot was taken out of it and what does belong was put in.
Stop at the two shapes. The denied aim came as a verb with a purpose particle: "that you should suffer." The affirmed aim comes as a noun in the accusative: "a reminding." Two different forms for one position. A present-tense verb stretches and renews, so what was denied is a condition running on with the one who bears it. A noun stands still and does not renew, so what is affirmed is a fixed property of what came down. What runs upon the one addressed was lifted; what stands in the Book was set in place. The word for reminding has its own entry in the glossary and is not unpacked again here. What this verse adds to it is that it arrives indefinite, with no article and nothing annexed to it: a reminding, not the reminding of such and such.
Now look at what the last particle attaches to. It stands on the relative pronoun and follows the word for reminding immediately, so it qualifies the reminding and states whom it falls upon. It is not attached to the sending down of the first verse, and the difference is the whole difference. Were it attached there, the verse would be saying the Book came down only for a certain group. What it says instead is that the reminding finds its place with whoever holds in awe. What comes down is one for everyone; where it lands is with whoever has the readiness for it.
And the relative pronoun names no one. No people, no class, no fixed description, only a present-tense verb that renews itself. The word for awe has its own entry in the glossary. What the verse adds is that it comes here as a verb and not as a noun, so the door stands open to whoever enters it and shut to whoever leaves it, not because he was labelled but because he acts or does not. And the verb has no object stated. It does not say "holds such and such in awe," so the one held in awe is left unnamed just as the one who holds is left unnamed.
A slot emptied by one verse and filled by the next, not by an opposite but by what belongs there. What came down is one; the last particle limits not the sending but the place where the reminding lands.
Commentaire
﴾ Seulement comme un rappel, pour qui redoute. ﴿

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is read as setting suffering against reminding: the Book did not come down for hardship but for remembrance. "For whoever holds in awe" is usually read as restricting the benefit to the people of faith, and the discussion expands into identifying who they are and into the degrees and divisions of awe.
A reading that makes the two words a pair of opposites, and identifies the beneficiaries the verse did not identify.
A root-reading
The verse is read from where its words stand. The excepting particle fills the slot of purpose that the previous verse emptied, and suffering and reminding are not counterparts in the language, so what joins them is position and not meaning. The denied aim came as a verb that stretches and renews; the affirmed one comes as a noun that stands still, indefinite and in the pattern of a verbal noun of instrument. The final particle attaches to the reminding just before it and not to the sending down, so the limit falls on where it lands and not on what came down. The relative pronoun names no one, and the verb of awe is present-tense, renewing, with no object stated. The words for reminding and for awe each have their own entry in the glossary.
A reading that asks what the last particle attaches to, and finds the limit on the beneficiary rather than on the sending.
The two readings do not conflict. The first hears one aim affirmed after another was denied; the second follows the particle to what it attaches to and stops at what was not named. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
