﴾ And what could bring you to know what ʿilliyyūn is? ﴿
The first mā is a question in the sense of a denial. It asks and thereby denies: nothing within the addressee's reach can bring him to this. And adrā is the fourth form, so the knowing here does not stand in the one who knows; it is brought to him from outside. The Surah has already put this same question once: "and what could bring you to know what sijjīn is?" One question laid on both sides.
And knowing, in its letters, is a settled arrival that goes back and forth and stretches until it comes to rest in a person; from it comes the phrase for tracking a report until one stands over it. It is knowledge won by returning and looking. And that is exactly what is denied: no amount of returning reaches this word. The door that is knocked on by looking is shut, and the door of being told is opened.
The second mā is another question, and after it stands the same noun, now in the nominative. In the verse before, it stood in the genitive after "in": "in ʿilliyyīn". So the word moves from the place of the container to the place of the subject. It was where the writing came to rest; now it is what is being asked about.
And it was not replaced by a pronoun that would have done its work. The word is said again in full after a single verse, and said in the nominative, and the nominative stands a noun on its own rather than hanging it on something else. So the question lifts the word rather than veiling it, and then the next verse comes with the answer. The Surah asks in order to answer, not to leave a gap for something else to fill.
The first mā is a question in the sense of a denial, and adrā is the fourth form: the knowing is not won by the knower's own effort but brought to him. Knowing, in its letters, is an arrival that returns and stretches until it settles in a person, and that is precisely what is refused: no repeated looking reaches this word. The Surah asked the very same question of the other side, "what could bring you to know what sijjīn is?" Then the noun is said again in full, with no pronoun standing in for it, and in the nominative after having stood in the genitive after "in": it moves from the place of the container to the place of the subject, from being where the writing rests to being what is asked about. A question that cuts off every road to it except the road the Surah opens a line later.
