﴾ A writing marked out. ﴿
The question was about ʿilliyyīn, and the answer comes as one noun and one description. No ceiling is named, no rank, no station. What is said is "a writing". And writing, in its letters, is a fine holding bound to its place so that it stays: a holder that fixes what is in it to its measure, so that nothing slips out and nothing is added on.
And it comes indefinite. Two verses back it was made definite by annexation, "the writing of those whose doing runs wide". So when the place is asked about, the answer is given by kind: a writing of this sort, not the writing that belongs to a particular people. The answer identifies by type and not by pointing.
Marqūm is a passive participle, so the mark falls into it and does not come out of it: it is marked, not marking. And marking, in its letters, is a trace drawn until it knots into its place and clings there; from it comes the mark set into a cloth so that washing does not take it away. So the description says that what is in it cannot be exchanged, not that it is large and not that it is lofty.
And this same answer has already been given in this Surah. Sijjīn was asked about, and the reply was "a writing marked out"; ʿilliyyūn is now asked about, and the reply is "a writing marked out". Two facing questions and one answer in which not a letter changes. So what separates the two halves is not the kind of thing that holds, but what has been held in it and whose it is.
ʿIlliyyīn was asked about, and the answer comes in two words. No ceiling, no rank, no station, but a holder that fixes what is in it to its measure. It comes indefinite after standing two verses back as definite by annexation, so the answer identifies by type and not by pointing. Marqūm is a passive participle: the mark falls into it and does not come out of it, and marking is a trace that knots into its place and clings and cannot be wiped, so the description says that what is in it cannot be exchanged. And it is the very answer given to the other side, letter for letter. Two facing questions and one answer: the difference does not lie in the holder, but in what has been held in it and whose it is.
﴾ Un écrit marqué. ﴿
