﴾ And the human says: what is wrong with her? ﴿
The verb qāla is in the past: "he said," not "he says" or "he will say," as though the saying had already fallen. The Surah carries the reader into that day as if he were in it: he hears the human utter his question and is not waiting for him to utter it.
The noun al-insān is made definite by the article, so it is the whole kind, neither a party out of it nor one singled out. Everyone who carries this name is taken by surprise in his own way: the one who has entrusted himself in safety (ʾ-m-n) understands and is astonished all the same, while the one who lived in inattention (gh-f-l) is astonished without understanding. Both utter the same question: "what is wrong with her?"
"What is wrong with her" is a turn that belongs to Arabic in particular. The expression mā li-fulān yafʿalu kadhā, "what is the matter with so-and-so that he does such a thing," is said when a man comes at a thing against his own habit. The question presupposes a known precedent: the earth was a place of firmness, a ground trodden by one who comes down upon her and asks nothing. Now she has gone out of her precedent, and the question goes out.
There is in it also the note of one struck by calamity: "what is wrong with her" is the very word of the one standing before a disaster and looking for someone to tell him. The human has halted at the door of what he does not know, and the earth that carried him has become the place where he stands. A hidden irony lies in that: the one who did not ask after her in the time of firmness asks after her in the time of uncovering. ﴿لَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ﴾, "do not work corruption in the earth," was the prohibition, and it was not taken; the question here is the question of one who did not ponder.
Al-insān, in the Arabic tongue, is from the root of uns, the growing at home with a place until its otherness becomes a second nature. The human grew at home with the earth, so that he would not turn toward her firmness until it fell away, because firmness is not turned toward. That familiarity had blinded the question, and its uncovering is what gives birth to the question.
The question is a mercy on its way: the heart that did not ask in ease is given a question in hardship. Yet the question, when it comes on the day of the reckoning, is not answered to the one who asks it; it is answered by an imposed telling that rises from beneath him, as she narrates her own news.
One single word uncovers everything: "what is wrong with her," the way of the Arabs in asking about what has broken with the habitual. Al-insān (ʾ-n-s) is made definite by the article, taking in the whole kind; the root means the growing at home with a place until its otherness is forgotten. The human grew at home with the earth for a long time, living upon her every day without a question; then she trembles, the familiarity breaks, and the question is uttered. The verb qāla is in the past, and the Surah carries the reader into that day as if he were in it. In the question there is an implicit admission: she had a habit, and that habit had become familiar. The one who did not ask after her in the time of firmness asks after her in the time of uncovering.
﴾ Et l'homme dit : qu'a-t-elle ? ﴿
