﴾ And the earth brings out the burdens that have weighed her down. ﴿
In the first verse the earth is shaken; in the second she brings out. The passage from the built-for-the-patient to the built-for-the-agent, from the one done to and the one who does, announces that the shaking was a door onto a work, not an end in itself. The earth wakes to what is in her and discharges it.
The verb akhrajat is of the ifʿāl pattern, which carries the act from the inward out to the outward: what was in the hollow is moved up to the surface. The earth that hides the graves and the ores and the secrets moves them all into a light that does not draw back, and she does not pick and choose: in "the burdens that have weighed her down," without restriction, everything that grew heavy in her comes out.
Athqālahā bears images that complete one another: the dead she swallowed, the treasures buried in her hollow, the secrets smothered under her back, and no one image cancels another. The root th-q-l gathers everything that presses upon its bearer by its weight, and everything laid down in the earth weighed upon her in its own way: the dead one by his shroud, the treasure by its value, the secret by the keeping of it.
The word here is athqāl, the plural of thiql, and the Surah will end on mithqāl dharra, an atom's weight. The same root weighs the load in the earth and weighs the deed in the balance: what the earth brought out here is weighed again there, and the weight that came out of the hollow meets the weight that comes down into the pan.
The prohibition in al-Baqara was ﴿لَا تُفْسِدُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ﴾, "do not work corruption in the earth," that is, do not leave in her a trace that goes rotten in her folds. Yet the human left one, and the earth bore it long, carrying the crime and the soundness together, the buried body and the hidden gift. Now she hands over what she carried, with no choice in the holding back and none in the bringing out: this hour of hers is his hour.
The earth of which it was said ﴿إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً﴾, "I am placing in the earth one who will follow in place," is the same earth that here empties herself of those who followed in place. What was laid down in her of creating and of deed comes back to the light of the reckoning, and whoever walked upon her one day has to remember that she will cast up what she stored.
The shaking was a labour, and the verse uncovers the newborn: burdens the earth had been carrying now come out. The shift in the acting is deliberate. In the first verse the earth is the one done to, she is shaken (a build for the patient), and here she has become the one who acts and brings out. "The earth brings out" (kh-r-j) is on the ifʿāl pattern, denoting the carrying of what was in the hollow to the surface; the shudder alerted her to what she carries, so she discharged what lay upon her. "Her burdens" (th-q-l) is annexed to her by her own pronoun: what she carried is what she herself brings out. The root gathers everything that presses upon its bearer by its weight, the dead one by his shroud, the treasure by its value, the secret by the keeping of it, a weight of every species coming out on one single day.
