﴾ So grant the rejecters time, give them respite, just a little. ﴿
The fāʾ in fa-mahhil gathers up the two verses before it. "They are devising a stratagem," and "I devise a stratagem." So, as a result of that, grant them respite. The respite is neither weakness nor a looking away; it is what follows from the certainty that the divine devising takes them in.
And the one addressed in the verb mahhil is a single person. The pronoun of the addressee stays folded inside the imperative, but the form of the imperative fixes a single addressee. He is the one who receives the word and receives their devising at the same time. And the verse speaks to him with a respite given by one who does not hurry, because he knows what power stands behind the respite.
The root m-h-l in Arabic gathers the sense of unhurried deliberateness and of the granting of a term. Mahhalahu is to give a term along with leave to continue in the state one is in. And the two forms in the verse are a repetition by two different verbs from the same root: mahhil on the pattern faʿʿil, and amhil on the pattern afʿil. The first says the instituting of the term by an act of its own, the second says the conveying of the term to the one who receives it.
And in the repeating of the root twice there is emphasis. The Qurʾān often repeats the verb under two different forms to increase its force. Mahhil ... amhil: the term is tied with two knots. The one addressed is commanded twice to grant them a term. And the root itself is repeated, so the meaning does not slip away.
Ruwayd is the diminutive of rūd. And al-rūd in Arabic is the easy walk, the going without haste. From it rāda, of one who goes back and forth with quiet steps, and al-mirwad, the probe moved back and forth in the eye. And the diminutive, by the wāw and the yāʾ in ruwayd, makes the term small and near, and not a term left open.
And to close with ruwaydan is intended. The term on which the command is built is not long. It is a small term, knotted by the diminutive. As though the verse said: do not hurry, but do not hold the term to be without end. The Surah closes on a word that gathers gentleness and firmness together. The term is granted, but its end is near.
And so the Surah closes. It opened with a heaven and a night-comer, and it ends with a term held in the hand of the One who owns the power behind it. The ending hands the reader what it received him with: a small knock at an hour chosen by the One who knows. The One who knocked at the first grants the term at the last.
The Surah closes with a command that branches off the setting of the two devisings against each other: "So grant the rejecters time, give them respite, just a little." The fāʾ is causal: since their devising is surrounded by a devising that takes it in, the one addressed has no need of haste. And the root m-h-l is said twice under two forms: mahhil on the pattern faʿʿil institutes the term, and amhil on the pattern afʿil conveys it to the one who receives it. The same root repeated in two knots. Then comes the closing on ruwaydan, the diminutive of rūd, the easy and unhurried walk: the term is granted, but its end is near and its span is not open. Those the verse names al-kāfirīn, from k-f-r, are those who covered over what had been plain in them. The Surah opened on a star that knocks by night and closes on a small term: the knock at the first opens the hearing, and the term at the last shuts the word upon a knotted gentleness. The One who knocked at the beginning grants the term at the end.
