﴾ And truly, both the after and the before are Ours. ﴿
The wāw here gathers the verse before it into the verse at hand. The two read as one announcement in two sentences: "Truly, the giving of guidance lies upon Us", and "And truly, both the after and the before are Ours." The repetition is meant. The emphasis meets in both, inna at the head and the lām before what is affirmed; the pronoun meets, nā; and the subject meets, what belongs to the One speaking and where He stands.
And the lām in lanā, "Ours", is the lām of owning and of belonging-to. It is not the lām in la-l-hudā, which is the lām of emphasis. The first assigns, the second affirms. The speech holds itself to a care of this order in every single word.
The order of the two words is meant. Time runs from the before to the after, the life now under way first and then what comes after it. But the wording turns that order over: Ours is the after, and then the before. And the fronting uncovers where the One speaking stands. He does not speak from the before. He speaks from the after. The one who walks in the life now under way may forget what comes after it. The One speaking begins with it, to remind him that it is the first in the reckoning even where it is the second in the running of time.
And in the choice of the two feminine forms there is a pattern that has been repeating through the Surah. Al-ḥusnā, the most-beautiful; al-yusrā, the most-easeful; al-ʿusrā, the most-difficult; al-ākhirah, the after; al-ūlā, the before: every one of them a feminine elative on the pattern fuʿlā. The Surah keeps this pattern for its great bare destinations, the feminine end that receives the act at its close. And here the after, which is where the striving comes to rest, and the before, which is where it set out, stand in one and the same form.
Al-ūlā is from the root ʾ-w-l, the root of awwal, "first", and of āl, that to which a thing comes back and to which it ascribes itself. In Arabic al-ūlā is not bare priority in time. It is what a thing comes back to at its beginning. The life now under way is called al-ūlā in this tongue because it is the place the human ascribes himself to before he comes back to what lies past it.
And the two words together, al-ākhirah and al-ūlā, close around both orbits. There is no place for the striving outside that enclosure. Whoever walks in the before comes back to the after. And both are owned by the One speaking. The one who walks owns nothing of either orbit, even when he claims he has need of nothing.
And in the Book this assigning is named in many places. ﴿هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ﴾, "He is the first and the last." One single wording closes around every stretch of time a human can picture. And here, in our Surah, the feminine wording, the after and the before, catches the two orbits as two entities, each of which receives the one who walks.
Verse twelve and verse thirteen together uncover how the speech is built. The One who owns both orbits, the before and the after, is not slipped by the walker in either of them. And the One who binds Himself to the guidance will not fall short of the sign. So the one walking the road of the most-difficult cannot claim that he was lost with no clear mark, nor that he ran clear of a reckoning. Both are settled: the clear mark came down, and there is no refuge left.
And in the verses that follow, the warning comes down made sensible: "So I have warned you of a fire that flares up." From the bare frame, the guidance, the after, the before, to the living scene, a fire that flares. The Surah moves from the structure to the sight, and then to the two kinds who stand before the sight.
The undertaking over the guidance calls for a second undertaking to complete it. "And truly, both the after and the before are Ours", carried by the same doubled emphasis. The root ʾ-kh-r: what comes along behind what went before. The root ʾ-w-l: what began first. Both spans lie in the hand of the One who speaks. The guidance issues from a self that owns the whole reach. And the One who owns the after and the before is the only one of whom a recompense can be asked.
﴿هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ﴾, « Il est le premier et le dernier ».
