﴾ There is an imbalance inside them, and the imbalance deepens as they persist. What awaits them is a painful consequence, earned by the gap they kept maintaining between what they said and what they did. ﴿
The word usually rendered "disease", maraḍ, comes from a root (m-r-ḍ) that names something wider than an organic ailment: a swerve away from the natural state the apparatus was formed on. The heart that has taken on this swerve no longer works upon a single unity; it has fallen into a structural imbalance that piles up on itself. What is named here is not a passing symptom but the disorder of a whole system: a spoiling of conviction out of doubt, or nifāq, or refusal, or the calling of the true false. And this is no moral stain pasted on from outside. It is a description of what happens inside a self when it is required to carry two contradictory pictures at once: its unity breaks, and it becomes diseased.
The fāʾ in fa-zādahum Allāh maraḍan, "so God increased them in the imbalance", is the fāʾ of consequence, not the fāʾ of beginning. The increase came because of the disease already in the hearts. So the increase is not a punishment brought in from elsewhere; it is the running out of a law of the world that meets the servant's choosing and carries it to the end of what was chosen. Set beside it a teacher marking a pupil: whoever failed, "the teacher failed him", not by forcing the outcome but by recording what the pupil chose. And the disease, when nothing resists it, breeds the conditions of its own increase from within. Every swerve prepares a deeper swerve, and the imbalance gathers on itself until its weight settles.
Lying at its root (k-dh-b) is speech set at odds with the real, and the verb arrives in the imperfect, yakdhibūn, which carries continuation, not in the perfect, which would mark an isolated event. So the reckoning does not fall on one lie but on an entire manner of living built on saying otherwise than doing. And the painful consequence comes "by" this accumulated lying, which is to say: not a vengeance imported from outside, but a natural outcome whose worldly opening was already there. Whoever lived a liar lived inside an imbalance that keeps him from finding anything palatable, and what awaits him completes what he began in himself. So nifāq stays the name of a structure that takes shape through the act, not the name of a stain fixed on the self from the start. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity.
Maraḍ (m-r-ḍ) is not only an organic ailment but a swerve away from the natural state the apparatus was formed on; the heart that has taken it on no longer works upon a single unity, and the structural imbalance piles up on itself. Then comes the fāʾ of consequence in "so God increased them": the increase is no imported punishment but the running out of a law of the world that meets the servant's choosing, for a disease unresisted breeds the conditions of its own increase from within and does not turn back without a counter-effort spent against it. And lying (k-dh-b) stands in the imperfect, yakdhibūn, so the reckoning falls on a manner of living built on saying otherwise than doing, not on an isolated moment; lying asks the self to hold two pictures at once until its unity breaks and its capacity to find anything palatable gives way. Hence the painful consequence, ʿadhāb alīm (ʿ-dh-b: what blocks a thing from being palatable; ʾ-l-m: an edge that falls, catches, and closes over, a description of what takes hold rather than of what is taken), is the natural extension of the narrowness the munāfiq had already opened in himself. The scene is not a stain pasted on, but the growth of a fault that began in speech and ended in the crumbling of a unity.
