﴾ They think they are tricking God and the people producing safety around them, and they are only tricking themselves, though they no longer have the inner sense to feel it. ﴿
Tricking at its root (kh-d-ʿ) is the making of a hidden hollow that shows other than what it holds: an inner cavity offered to the outside under a surface of a different kind. Three parties stand in the verse: God, those who produce safety, and their own selves. Settled first is that God is not tricked, since He knows the secret and what is more hidden than the secret; nothing reaches Him through the front mouth without His seeing many times as much through the mouth at the back. And the form yukhādiʿūna, the mufāʿala pattern, points to an act whose doer imagines himself facing a party that can be taken in, while God is no party to the exchange he imagines. Those who produce safety may be taken in by the surface for a time, until the sending down uncovers what was kept back, as the verses that follow will do in turn. And the weight of the trick keeps coming back on the munāfiq himself: whoever said with his tongue what he does not make in his depth has cut a pit into his own inner building that no fresh claim will fill.
Trust is degrees and levels, not one fixed rank, and hence the call "O you who have produced safety, produce safety": an address to whoever began the safety, to make it new. So the munāfiq does not trick God, nor those who produce safety, so much as he tricks himself. Every time he says "we have produced safety" and it is not true, he takes a layer off his inner safety instead of laying one on, and the trust in his heart falls back, not to resting content with what he has, but to losing it. The restricting form, "they are only tricking themselves", turns his illusion over: he thought both ends of his act stood outside him, God and those who produce safety, and the text declares that the real counterpart in the exchange is his own self. The countermovement in this Book is stated plainly, "if you obey God and His messenger, He will not diminish anything of your works": obedience rebuilds, layer by layer, the safety that nifāq took down.
Feeling at its root (sh-ʿ-r) is a fine perception that wells up from the depth and reaches into awareness; from it comes shiʿr, poetry, as a delicate sensing, and shaʿr, hair, as fine threads running out from the inward. "They no longer have the inner sense to feel it" describes the failure of that instrument. The trick that turns back on the self weakens the very sense that would have reported the turning back. Each new covering lessens the feeling that anything is being covered, until the person wakes on the Day of Judgement to the truth of what he had been doing without knowing it. And what stands confirmed is that nifāq is the structure of a self with two passages, not a moral accusation; and that trust is an act of safety that gets made, not an identity card that gets carried. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity.
Tricking at its root (kh-d-ʿ) is the making of an inner cavity offered to the outside under a surface of a different kind: a pit the munāfiq digs in himself every time he says what he does not do. The exchange has three parties. God is not tricked, seeing both mouths at once; those who produce safety may be taken in for a while; but the real counterpart in this exchange is the self itself, "they are only tricking themselves". Every lie takes a layer off the inner safety instead of adding one, since trust is levels that accumulate and not a fixed rank: "O you who have produced safety, produce safety" is a call to whoever began the safety, to make it new. And the deepest damage is the close, "they no longer have the inner sense to feel it": feeling (sh-ʿ-r) is a fine perception welling up from the depth like the thin hair that runs out from within, and it is the first thing a long covering puts out of service, for the trick that turns back on the self weakens precisely the sense that would have reported the turning. So this verse is no scolding but a diagnosis: tricking is a continuous inner erosion, and feeling is the organ of sight that the returning trick disables before the last covering is lifted.
