﴾ Attend: they themselves are the ones doing the breaking, but they can no longer sense it. ﴿
The answer comes as a flat cancelling: "Attend: they themselves are the ones doing the breaking." The particle alā is an alerting that runs ahead of the report, laying on the listener a readiness to receive the undoing of what was said just before. Then the pronoun of separation, hum, "they themselves", set after innahum, fastens the attribute on them and on no one else, and takes from them the claim of repair. And the "only" they spoke in the verse before is itself a tool of restriction, while the verse here uses a tool of restriction against it: their shutting of themselves inside repair is met by a divine shutting of them inside breaking. When two restrictions stand against each other, the one resting on knowledge of the reality outweighs the one issuing from a diseased self.
"They can no longer sense it" is an exact diagnosis, not a passing rebuke. Feeling (sh-ʿ-r) is the fine perception that wells up from the depth and reaches into awareness, and it is the most valuable instrument free will has for the self's seeing of itself. Whoever has ruined that instrument by keeping up the covering can no longer tell what breaks from what repairs, and so he names his breaking repair while reckoning himself truthful. On this the balance of the Day of Judgement is set: it measures the act, not the speech. It profits no one to claim he is spreading good while he takes the structures apart, nor to describe himself with what his own traces deny. Repair is the name of an act that gets made, not a banner that gets raised; and breaking is the name of an effect that gets measured, not an accusation that gets pasted on. The word precedes the term, and the role precedes the identity.
"But" is the particle of qualification, and it joins two reports that face each other: they are breakers in the matter, and they are not sensing it in themselves. That qualification separates two halves of the judgement. The first, their being the ones doing the breaking, is a declared matter that can rightly be ascribed to them in the shared world. The second, their not sensing it, describes an inner state and explains why ordinary counsel does not reach them. It has already been settled that this Book reads the doer in his role and not in his essence, and the verse here draws the line cleanly: a judgement upon the act, which is breaking, and a diagnosis of the sense, which is damage. Each of the two calls for a different treatment: the first, that the act on the earth be stopped; the second, that the inner sense be built again.
They claimed the restriction in the verse before with "only", and the reply came as a tight counter-restriction: alā, an alerting that prepares for the undoing of what preceded, and innahum hum, two pronouns stacked to lock the description on them alone. When two restrictions stand against each other, the one resting on knowledge of the reality outweighs the one issuing from a diseased self. Then comes the qualification with "but", an eloquent parting of two halves: an objective judgement upon the act, breaking on the earth, and a diagnosis of the inner sense, "they can no longer sense it". Feeling (sh-ʿ-r) is a fine radiance that wells up from the depth and reaches into awareness, the most valuable instrument free will has for the self's seeing of itself; and whoever ruined it by keeping up the covering can no longer tell what breaks from what repairs, so he names his breaking repair while reckoning himself truthful. On this the balance of the Day of Judgement stands: it measures the act, not the speech, so a claim of repair profits nothing when the traces of it are ruin. And the word that precedes the term goes bad when no act moves it.
