﴾ When she delivered her, she said: my Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), I have delivered her female. Allah knew best what she delivered, and the male is not like the female. I have named her Mary, and I place her and her offspring in Your refuge from the accursed divider. ﴿
Appearing corrects the image formed beforehand. Delivery, from w-ḍ-ʿ, is a joining that gathers with weight and then emerges from depth, the bringing down of what was in the womb into an uncovered place. Repeating "I have delivered her" fixes the real before the expected: what was given is female. The words "Allah knew best what she delivered" then enter and lift divine knowledge above the reckoning of the one who made the vow.
Difference does not withhold the name. The sentence denies likeness between male and female within the scene without turning the female into a failure of the vow. Naming comes at once. The term for a name, from s-m-w, denotes a current that gathers and then joins the named one to what she is known by. She who had been "what is in my womb" became "Mary": she appeared, and so received a name and a direction.
The gift extends into the guarding of its own extension. Seeking refuge, from ʿ-w-dh, is something exposed that grips what is next to it and fuses with it so as not to leave it, a taking of shelter in a refuge and a clinging to it. The mother gathers her daughter and her daughter's offspring into one request for protection, so the call reaches from the present into what will come out of it. What refuge is sought from is "the accursed divider": a force of scattering driven far from the centre.
Knowledge receives what corrected the expectation. The vow had concerned "what is within my womb," and when the concealed appeared, the female was determined. Above that determination, "Allah knew best what she delivered" opens the gift toward knowledge wider than the difference that surprised her mother. What the mother now knows is a visible part; Allah's knowledge encompasses the child, her course, and what will emerge from her. The scene therefore moves from the narrowness of the prior image into the breadth of what the Rabb knows.
Denying likeness does not make either side an incomplete copy of the other; it preserves the difference disclosed by delivery. Naming and refuge then become two direct acts toward the one who appeared as she appeared: she receives a name, is joined to protection, and her extension is mentioned before it exists. What differed from expectation becomes the place of a care wider than expectation, not something discarded. Reality is not asked to apologize to the prior image; the image must widen for what Allah has placed in the scene.
Delivery discloses what was not known to the one who made the vow, and "Allah knew best" returns the scene to a wider knowledge. She does not halt at the difference between male and female; she names the newborn and places her in Allah's protection together with her offspring. The saying thus moves from the surprise of appearing to the acceptance of what is there and the guarding of its course.
L'apparition corrige l'image formée d'avance.
