﴾ He said: do not fear, the two of you. I am with you both. I hear and I see. ﴿
The verb that opened the verse before this one is dual; the verb that opens this one is singular.
Two spoke, and one speaks: the two forms stand side by side, in two verses that are read together.
They said "we fear," and they were told "do not fear, the two of you." The root is one, and the form turns over: a report becomes a prohibition.
The answer does not mention what they feared. It says neither that he will not rush nor that he will not overreach; they are forbidden the fear, and the feared thing is not denied.
This root runs through the Surah in three shapes: a prohibition to one, in "take it, and do not fear"; then a report from two; then a prohibition to two.
What was said to one at the staff is said to two at the setting out.
They said innanā, and the reply was innanī.
One letter separates the two words. The fear had been affirmed by a particle, so the being-with is affirmed by that same particle.
It is an emphasis answering an emphasis, and a nūn of two answered by a yāʾ of one.
Maʿa is an adverb of accompaniment, and by itself it does not say how.
So the verse did not stop at it: two verbs follow, and they are the explanation it chose for itself.
So whoever wants to know what this accompaniment is must read what comes after the word, and nothing is added to the two.
"I hear," with no statement of what is heard; "I see," with no statement of what is seen.
Neither a heard thing nor a seen thing is named. The two verbs stand unbounded, whereas whatever has an object is bounded by that object.
Hearing, in s-m-ʿ, is a running that pours in and is then gripped inside, rather than the mere arrival of a sound at an ear; seeing, in r-ʾ-y, is a light touch out of which a grasp breaks and then extends.
This second root has already run through the Surah as a purpose, in the fourth form: "that We might show you some of Our greatest signs." There it was the making of another see; here it is the seeing itself, bare.
Two verses before this one, two ends were joined by "or": "he will recollect, or stand in awe." In the one that follows it, two feared things are joined by "or."
Here two are joined by "and": "I hear and I see."
Three consecutive verses, and in each one of them a pair. For what is hoped, one suffices, and for what is feared, one suffices; what the two of them are answered with does not divide.
"He said" is singular, answering the dual "the two of them said" in the verse before it. "Do not fear, the two of you" returns their own word to them as a prohibition after it had been a report, and neither of the two feared things is denied in the answer: they are forbidden the fear and what they feared is not denied, and the root runs through the Surah as a prohibition to one, then a report from two, then a prohibition to two. Innanī is the form of innanā with a single pronoun, so the emphasis answers the emphasis. "With you both" is an adverb of accompaniment that does not say by itself how, and so the verse, rather than stopping at it, followed it with two verbs that are the explanation it chose for itself, and nothing is added to them. "I hear and I see" are two present verbs with no object to bound them; hearing in its root is a pouring-in that is gripped inside, and seeing is a light touch out of which a grasp breaks and extends, and this root came in the Surah in the fourth form in a place of showing, so here it comes bare. The two verbs are joined by "and" after two verses in each of which a pair was joined by "or": one suffices in what is hoped and one suffices in what is feared, and what the two of them are answered with does not divide.
﴾ Il dit : ne craignez pas, vous deux. Je suis avec vous deux. J'entends et Je vois. ﴿
