﴾ So come to him and say: we are two sent by your Rabb (the Nurturing Sustainer), so release with us the Children of Israel and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Rabb. And peace be upon whoever has followed the guidance. ﴿
The first command was "go, the two of you, to," with a preposition; this one is "so come to him," with no letter between.
Going needs ilā, because a distance stands between the one who goes and his end, whereas coming fastens the object onto the verb, because the distance has run out.
A letter drops, and the end of the road is read in that dropping.
"Say, the two of you" came in this Surah three verses earlier: "then say to him a soft saying."
There the saying was described and its content left unmentioned; here the content is mentioned and the saying left undescribed.
The two commands share one and the same wording, and one of them gives the manner, the other the words.
"Two sent" is a dual whose nūn has dropped for the annexation, and two report themselves under one description.
It is annexed to "your Rabb," not to "our Rabb."
Two verses earlier the two of them had said "our Rabb" in calling out; when the speech passed to the one it is said to, the Rabb was attributed to him.
The attribution is repeated within the same verse, in "from your Rabb," which sets the kāf of address twice upon the same word.
They said "two sent," and then they said "so send": one root, with two words standing between the two utterances.
The one told that they are two sent is himself asked to send, and the description they gave of themselves becomes the act that is asked of him.
This command is singular and directed at him, set between two dual commands directed at them: two verbs for two and one verb for one, in a single verse.
The verse before it has "I am with you both," and this one has "with us."
The same adverb occurs in two consecutive verses: it was given to them, so they asked it for others.
What is asked is a releasing together with an accompanying, not a turning loose to wherever they please.
The verb is in the second form, and the doubling of its middle letter multiplies the act and keeps it running on.
The root ʿ-dh-b is a holding into which something painful runs, with no release for the one held. So what is forbidden is a continuing confinement, not a single blow.
A request is followed by a prohibition: let them go, and do not hold them in this.
Qad with the past denotes realization, and the report follows the request. Their words are "we have come," not "we shall come."
Five verses earlier they had been told "carrying My signs," a plural annexed to the yāʾ of the one speaking.
Here the two of them report "with a sign," which is singular and indefinite, drawn by min to "your Rabb."
They were given a plural and they said one, while the bāʾ is the same in both places.
The sentence is a subject made definite by the article and a predicate that is a preposition with its noun: "peace," then "upon."
The wording is "upon whoever," not "and peace be upon you," and man is a general relative that singles out no one.
Its clause is a past verb, "has followed," and neither a present that is awaited nor a promise that would be accepted: the condition is a following that has fallen out.
"Has followed" is in the eighth form, the taking of the act to oneself by the doer's own choosing. So what is conditioned is a deed, not a belonging.
"The guidance" is made definite by the article, whereas at the head of this whole account it was sought, indefinite, at a fire: "or find upon the fire a guidance." What was looked for as an indefinite at the beginning of the road is what must be followed, as a definite, at the end of the message.
So the peace is held out and suspended in one and the same breath: given over to whoever will, and withheld until the deed falls.
"So come to him" takes its object directly, after going had been made to take ilā: the dropping of the letter is the running out of the distance. "Say, the two of you" repeats a command that came three verses earlier with its manner described and its content passed over in silence, and it comes here with its content mentioned and no description. "We are two sent by your Rabb" is a dual report whose nūn dropped for the annexation, and the Rabb is attributed to the one spoken to rather than to them, and two verses earlier they had called out "our Rabb"; the same attribution is repeated in "from your Rabb." "So send" is from the very root of "two sent," so the description they gave of themselves becomes an act asked of him, and it is a singular command between two dual commands. "With us" carries the adverb of accompaniment over from the verse before it: they were given an accompaniment, so they asked an accompanying for others. "Do not torment them" is a prohibition in the second form, and the root is a holding into which something painful runs, with no release. Then comes "we have come to you with a sign": a realization in the past, and a single indefinite thing after they had been given a plural in "My signs." The close is "and peace be upon whoever has followed the guidance": a definite subject and a prepositional predicate, with man general and singling out no one, and its clause a past verb in the eighth form, so the condition is a deed that has fallen out by the doer's own choosing, neither a promise nor a belonging; "the guidance" is definite, after it had been sought, at the head of this whole account, indefinite, at a fire.
