Commentary
The verse joins nothing with a conjunction. "The running ones" and then "the ones that take cover" come straight after "the ones that draw back," with no particle set between them. A conjunction would signal a plurality of things; its absence here makes the three into descriptions of one described thing.
So there are not three things in the verse but one thing seen three times: it folds back, it runs on, it enters a covert. And the middle description is the one that ties the two ends together.
The root j-r-y is an emerging out of a confine that goes on connected, extending and not stopping. A jāriya is what has kept to its channel and not gone stale; jarā is to flow steadily; the majrā is the place of that continuous flowing.
In the root, running carries no halt within itself, and it carries no end of its own: it is a going forward along a channel the runner did not make. And so the description here comes as an active participle and not as a verb: a state standing in them, not an event that falls once.
The root k-n-s is a sealing that holds in a hollow and then slides into it. The kinās is the veiled place a wild animal withdraws into and is lost to sight within; kanasa is to enter one's covert. So the third description is an entering into a shelter prepared for it, not a hiding that happens by chance.
And the fuʿʿal form returns a second time, as it came in "the ones that draw back": going into the covert is a binding, repeated description and not an incident to be recounted. With that the circuit closes: a folding back, a running, a covert, and then it begins again.
And three descriptions with no name beside them. What is sworn by in this verse is a motion whose shape is known and whose owner is not.
The verse sets two descriptions after a third with no conjunction to join them, so the three become one shape and not three things. Al-jawār, from j-r-y: an emerging out of a confine that goes on connected along a channel it did not make, and the active participle makes it a standing state and not a passing event. Al-kunnas, from k-n-s: a sealing that holds in a hollow and then slides into it, and the kinās is a prepared cover that is entered. And the fuʿʿal form returns and fixes both descriptions as binding states. So the thing sworn by folds back, then runs, then takes shelter: a circuit that completes and then begins again. A shape described with precision, for an owner who was never named.
Commentaire
وتُترجَمُ: «that run their courses and disappear».
Two Readings
Common reading
"The running ones, the ones that take cover" is read in the received tradition together with "the ones that draw back" as descriptions of the five wandering bodies: they run in their courses and then kanasa, that is, are lost from sight in the light of day as a wild animal is lost in its covert. Others read the stars generally; others the gazelles and wild cattle that run and then withdraw into their lairs. Rendered: "that run their courses and disappear."
A reading that names the thing described and takes the three descriptions as its signature.
A root-reading
The absence of a conjunction between the descriptions makes them one shape and not three things. Al-jawār (j-r-y): an emerging out of a confine that goes on continuously along a channel it did not make, and the active participle fixes a state rather than recounting an event. Al-kunnas (k-n-s): a sealing that holds in a hollow and then slides into it, the kinās being a prepared shelter one enters, not one stumbled upon. And the fu''al form in the first and third fixes the repetition. The sense: "a motion that folds back, then runs, then withdraws into its covert, and then begins again."
A reading that reads the shape in full and leaves the thing described where the verse left it.
The two readings do not conflict. The first names what is described; the second counts the complete circuit the three descriptions hold. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
Three descriptions and no name, and that alone is worth pausing over. Had identifying been the aim, a name would have been shorter than three epithets. What came instead is the whole shape: a folding back, a running, a covert. The oath falls on a motion and not on a body.
And in the three descriptions a circuit closes and opens again. What ran came back, what hid appeared, what came forward folded away. This is the shape of everything that can be trusted for timekeeping, because it does not fail its turn, and that is why it could be sworn by.
Then the two verses that follow bring the night and the morning, another circuit that closes and opens. So what is sworn by across this whole stretch is in truth one thing: a regularity that goes absent and returns at its appointed time.
Perhaps in the joining of running, folding back, and disappearing there is a description that fits what we see in the sky of bodies that go forward on their track, then appear to fall back, then are lost in the light of day; and perhaps the withholding of a name leaves room for everything that has run to that description, whether it has been recognized or not. And perhaps the description is wider than the sky altogether, covering all that appears, then withdraws, then takes shelter in what covers it. All of this is conjecture, and we halt at its edge; the verse itself mentioned nothing but three descriptions.
Tadabbur
