﴾ And what runs through it and no longer parts from it is from a raising to the topmost (tasnīm). ﴿
A line ago the drink was described as coming through clear and then sealed, and now it is said to hold in it something that is not it. The two descriptions do not break against each other: clearness here is that nothing remains in a thing which could separate out of it, not that the thing is one with no second in it.
Mizāj, from m-z-j, is the passing of one thing into another until the two gather as a single mass. It is not an addition that can be taken back, nor a layer that can be lifted off. What has been mixed is not drawn out again, and so the mixing belongs to the clearness rather than undoing it.
Min in this line does what it did in the line before: a piece of a whole. Twice in two verses what is taken is measured out and not spread.
And tasnīm keeps its indefinite ending. It is a name spoken without an article and without anything pointed at: the listener hears it and holds nothing of it in his hand, and so stays pulled taut until the explaining comes.
It is from s-n-m, a running welling that gathers at the highest point it reaches; from this same root the hump gathers at the top of the back. And it stands in the form that makes a verbal noun: an event, not a place. The source is named by the motion that lifts it, not by a patch of ground one could indicate.
The tautness does not last: the next verse sets one word in the accusative upon this name and opens it. The Surah names and then explains, and leaves no name it has spoken without an explanation of its own.
Mizāj, from m-z-j, is the passing of one thing into another until the two gather as a single mass, so what entered the drink is not sorted back out of it, and the clearness given a line earlier holds, since clearness is that nothing remains which could separate. And "from" is a second partitive in two verses: twice over, what is taken is measured. Tasnīm, from s-n-m, is a running welling that gathers at the highest point it reaches, and it stands in the form that makes a verbal noun: a motion of lifting, not a patch to be pointed at. And it stays indefinite, with no article, so the listener is held to a name he owns nothing of, until the verse after it sets one word down and opens it. What mingles with their clear drink comes from above, and what is named for them is explained to them in the line that follows.
