﴾ What closes it off is a holding scent (misk); and in that, let those who stretch themselves toward one thing stretch. ﴿
A seal is what is set between you and a thing. You see it and you do not reach past it. That is what every sealing does, and what the sealing in the verse before did: a closure that tells you to stop.
And then this very barrier is said to be a scent. Nothing is less able to keep you out than a scent: it cannot be held, it cannot be screened, its travelling toward you cannot be halted. What was placed as the limit between you and the thing is the first part of the thing to cross over to you.
So the vessel is read before it is opened. What is sealed is not tasted, and what reaches you of it is what clung to its closing. The last thing laid on it is the first thing known from it.
Misk is from m-s-k, a grip that holds the fine thing so that it cannot slip away; from this same root comes the verb for closing the hand on something and not letting it go. The scent that carries this name is the one that clings to whatever it has touched and does not leave it.
So both words in the one clause are a holding: a seal that will not come loose from what it was pressed onto, and a scent that will not leave what it has touched. The thing was shut with one grip and marked with another. What will not open to you has already fastened onto you.
"And in that" comes first in its clause, and the pointer used is the far one: a thing is described until the description is full, and then it is pointed at as though at a distance. And the particle is "in", not "toward": the contending is placed inside what it is for, not launched at it from outside.
The verb, from n-f-s, is a welling that opens outward and glides on out there, and it is built here in the form of shared action. The contenders are selves each of which reaches out toward one thing at the same moment. The sense is not shouldering another off his place; it is each self going out to what the other goes out to.
Then the people are named by the very act they are commanded to do: a verb and its agent-noun from one root in one line. This is how the Surah opened as well, on a party named for what they do to a measure and not by any name of their own. At both ends the name comes out of the deed, and the whole course of the Surah lies between them: one is known by what he shaved off, the other by what he went out toward.
"What closes it off", from kh-t-m, is a fine stopping that clings and does not come loose, so it is the barrier between you and what lies under it; and then it is called a scent, and m-s-k is a grip that holds fast and will not let go of what it has touched. So the limit that keeps you out is the one thing that crosses, and the last thing laid on the vessel is the first thing known from it. Then "and in that", with the far pointer and with the particle of place rather than the particle of goal: the contending sits inside what it is for, not sent toward it from outside. And a verb with its agent-noun from n-f-s: selves going out together toward one thing, a people named for what they do, as the first party the Surah named was named for what it does.
