﴾ So remind, if reminding profits. ﴿
The root dh-k-r turns, in Arabic, on bringing back to presence what had gone absent from the heart. Dhikr is the opposite of forgetting, the root n-s-y of the sixth verse. And al-dhikrā is the name of what is brought back out of heedlessness. From it come dhakara al-shayʾa, he made the thing present to his heart, and tadhakkara, he sought to make it present by effort. And the faʿʿala pattern, in dhakkir, charges the agent to produce that presence in another.
And the command comes after the making to recite and the smoothing. One who has not been made to recite and has not been smoothed is not commanded to remind. The reminder comes out of a heart that what was cast into it has filled, and comes down on a heart that had been heedless of it. The one who reminds is, in this sense, a passage between what was cast upon him and the one who receives it.
The condition with in opens two outcomes in Arabic: it may profit, it may not. And the root n-f-ʿ names what pushes away a harm and produces a good in a place. What profits is what moves the place from lack to fullness. The reminder profits in a heart made ready to receive it, and lies idle in a heart shut upon itself.
And the condition here does not suspend the command. The Book does not say "if the reminder does not profit, do not remind." It says "So remind, if reminding profits." The charge is absolute, and the result hangs on the one reminded. Whoever has grasped this reminds without weariness at the result, because the result is outside his hand. What is in his hand is the act of reminding; what is in the other's hand is to receive it or to turn it back.
This verse stands at a turning point of the Surah. Before it, a promise to the one made to recite: "We shall make you recite, so you will not forget," then "And We will smooth you toward the smoothest road." After it, the parting of those reminded: he who fears remembers, and the most-wretched keeps his side away. And the verse is between the two, a charge that opens the door of the parting.
And the reader, in pronouncing fa-dhakkir, feels how the act goes out of the heart of the one made to recite toward the hearts of those who will be reminded. The reminder comes down from the sky of the making to recite to the earth of the hearts that receive. And what receives this reminder branches out in the two verses that follow.
This verse branches out of what came before it, the promises of the making to recite and of the smoothing: "So remind, if reminding profits." The fa- comes out of the making to recite and the smoothing into a single command. Dhakkir, on the doubled faʿʿala pattern of dh-k-r, brings back to presence what had gone absent from the heart; and the doubled form charges the agent to produce that presence in another and not in himself alone. The reminder is not the property of the one made to recite, it is his task toward others. Then the condition, in nafaʿati al-dhikrā, from n-f-ʿ, what pushes away a harm and produces a good in a place. The condition does not deny the reminder, it opens its door: the charge is absolute, the result hangs on the one reminded. Whoever the reminder profited took the profit, and whoever it did not profit did not make the reminder idle: the reminder passed him by. The two verses that follow branch from this condition into two facing roads.
﴾ Rappelle, si le rappel profite. ﴿
