Commentary
The particle ilā ("to, toward") is a particle of endpoint, by which the turning of attention reaches its limit. The looking asked for here is driven toward the sky and comes to rest there; it does not fall on it in passing. This directing arrives within a sequence opened by "will they not look, then," and the linking wa ("and") joins the sky to what came before it, the camels and how they were made, setting it as a second sign in a chain of things the human being is called to ponder.
The sky is al-samāʾ (root s-m-w), a term denoting height and loftiness: what rose, is elevated, and overshadows what lies beneath it. The name itself carries the attribute of rising, and what follows, "how it was raised," draws out this meaning latent in the name and makes it the object of the look. The one who is called is called to lift his gaze to what is lifted in itself.
Then kayfa ("how") asks about manner and form, not about whether the act occurred at all. Without asking whether the sky was raised or not, the verse affirms the raising and calls one to ponder its form: in what shape was it raised? How did it hold firm, raised? The question opens the look onto the precise how once the fact is granted.
In kayfa there is a cleaving and a passing into the inside of the matter asked about: the questioner presses into the making of the raised sky and does not stop at its surface, seeking to distinguish the form by which it stands. The interrogative here is an instrument of invitation to examine and scrutinize, not an instrument of doubt about the fact.
The verb is rufiʿat (root r-f-ʿ), a root that turns on carrying a thing up from its low place and settling it on high. To rafaʿa a building is to raise and erect it; the rafīʿ of station is the one whose rank is elevated; raising is the opposite of setting down and lowering. The passive build, "it was raised," folds the raiser away and leaves the trace standing: a sky upright in its height, a raising complete and fixed, and a doer who is not hidden from the one who ponders.
In "it was raised" there is, further, a settled completion: the verb is past, and the sky has not ceased to stand on its raising, neither sinking nor going out of true. So the looking called for is a looking into a making that stands at every hour, bearing witness by its firmness and its height to the one who raised it. By this the verse joins the form of the raised sky to the form of the camels made before it, each a precise making, driven to the look so as to point to the one who perfected it.
The verse drives the look toward the sky with the particle of endpoint, ilā; the sky, from s-m-w, is what rose and is elevated and overshadows what is beneath it, so the name itself carries the attribute of height that what follows draws out. Kayfa (root k-y-f) is a question about form that presses into the making once the fact is granted: it asks in what shape the sky was raised and held firm, not whether it was raised or not. Rufiʿat (root r-f-ʿ) is a raising complete and fixed, its agent unnamed but his work apparent. So the verse calls for the gaze to be lifted to what is in itself lifted, and for its precise form to be pondered; it joins the making of the sky to the making of the camels before it in a chain of signs driven to the look.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"And to the sky, how it was raised" is read within the verses that call attention to the traces of making: the denier is summoned to look at the sky raised without pillars that you see, how Allah raised it and held it up, as an argument from it for His power over the resurrection, after they denied the Overwhelming Event (al-ghāshiya) and the reckoning. It is one of four successive signs: the camels, the sky, the mountains, and the earth, by which what the addressee witnesses in his surroundings is brought forward.
A reading that makes looking at the sky an argument for the resurrection within the setting of denial.
A root-reading
Al-samāʾ (root s-m-w): what rose and is elevated and overshadows, the name itself carrying the attribute of height. Kayfa (root k-y-f): a question about form that cleaves into the inside of the making once the fact of the raising is granted. Rufiʿat (root r-f-ʿ): a carrying up to a height and a settling there, complete and fixed, by an unnamed agent whose work is apparent. The verse sounds the shape of an invitation to look: lift your gaze to what is itself raised, and ponder in what form its raising was made firm so that it held.
A reading that hears, in the roots, the height of the name, the penetrating question of form, and the fixed raising.
The two readings do not conflict. The first makes the sky an argument for the resurrection within the setting of denial; the second hears, in the roots, the height of what is looked at, the question of its form, and its complete raising. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
The verse sets up a stance of looking directed by the endpoint-particle ilā ("to"): the gaze is not left to scatter but driven to a single limit, the raised sky. The verse is an invitation to ponder, fixed in its direction, before it is a report about a making.
And the place of kayfa ("how") moves the look from the fact of the raising to its form, as the root k-y-f showed in the seeking to see a hidden shape. What is asked is not merely the acknowledgment that the sky is raised, but the passing-into the precise how by which it held firm, raised.
This fixed raising, its agent unnamed, joins the sky to what came before it, "the camels, how they were created": two signs in one sequence driven to the look, each a perfected making that points to its perfecter by its firmness. The how of the sky prepares the mountains and the earth that follow in the same chain.
It may be that the choice of "how it was raised" over "that it was raised" points to a door of looking onto the sky's form that does not close: perhaps the one called is called to trace continually the how of this raising, so that the more he ponders the expanse above him, its order, and what holds the raised thing in its height, the deeper the question grows rather than shutting. And it may be that the renewable form of kayfa makes every look at the sky a fresh look, never reaching the end of the answer to rest there.
Tadabbur
