Commentary
The verse opens with an interrogative hamza that carries reproach and a sense of lateness: a-falā, "will they not, then." The question does not ask for a piece of news; it urges an act that ought to have happened and did not. The fā that follows ties this urging to what came before it and makes it its fruit: after the mention of two destinies has passed, attention turns to what stands present beneath the eye.
Looking, from n-ẓ-r, denotes the turning of eye and heart together toward a thing so that what is in it may be drawn out; the falling of an image upon the sight is not, by itself, looking. The phrase reproaches a people past whom the signs go by without their looking well into them: they see, and they do not look. What is asked for is a looking that pierces to the "how" of the making and does not halt at the outward bulk of the body.
Al-ibil, the camels, is from ʾ-b-l, which denotes what gathers and packs close together, so that it keeps to its place and bears with it. From the same root come abala, said of a beast that makes do with fresh pasture in place of water and endures, and al-abīl, one who stands over a matter and keeps to it. The name itself, then, carries the sense of patience under hardship and of holding fast to a harsh state. The animal is also the nearest thing to fall under the eye of the one addressed in his own surroundings, neither a strange creature to be sought out nor a distant one to be laboured after.
There is a wisdom in the choice of the familiar. The witness is taken from what the feet tread every day and never regard, not driven in from the far ends of the earth. The verse turns the eye back toward what it has grown so used to that it has gone blind to it, and states that the near and neglected thing holds what would suffice as a proof, were it looked into.
Kayfa, "how," asks after the form and the manner, not after the existence. The wording is "how were they made," and not "were they created": the creating is settled and done with, and what is sought is reflection upon the manner of the making and its soundness. Making, from kh-l-q, is a piercing measuring-out that fixes a thing soundly upon a weighed measure, with the result that what is made comes out measured and finely wrought, not loose and running free.
The verb khuliqat, "they were made," is built without a named agent; it turns the looking toward the craft and leaves the Maker behind it, known by His trace. The eye falls upon the thing made, and the heart is led from the soundness of the making to the One who made it sound. This is the looking that is asked for, passing from the "how" that shows to the One who made every "how" sound.
The verse urges a looking that has been left undone. "Will they not look, then" joins a hamza of reproach to a fā of connection, and the two together make this reflection the fruit of what came before it, the mention of the two destinies. Looking, from n-ẓ-r, is the turning of eye and heart to draw out what is in a thing, not a bare seeing. What is looked at is al-ibil, the camels, from ʾ-b-l: a familiar creature that gathers patience under hardship, brought forward as a witness from what is near and neglected rather than from what is far and laboured after. The question "how they were made," from kh-l-q, is a reflection upon the form of a measured and soundly wrought making, not upon the origin of existence. So the verse carries the eye from the soundness of the near thing made to the One who made it sound, in a looking that pierces to the "how" and does not halt at the familiar.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
"Will they not look at the camels, how they were made?" is read as a call to look at the making of the camel in particular: a great body that submits to the small, that kneels to be loaded, eaten, and ridden, that endures thirst and burden across the wastes. It is the animal the first addressees knew in their peninsula, on which their life rested. Al-ibil was also read by some as the rain-clouds, but the camel is the well-known reading.
A reading that fixes the thing looked at in the setting and life of the first addressees.
A root-reading
Yanẓurūn (root n-ẓ-r): the turning of eye and heart together to draw out what is in a thing. Al-ibil (root ʾ-b-l): a creature that gathers patience under hardship and a holding to its state. Kayfa ("how") asks about the manner, not the existence. Khuliqat (root kh-l-q): a piercing, sound measuring-out upon a weighed measure, built without a named maker, so the Maker stays known by His trace. The hamza and fā are reproach and connection. The verse becomes: "Will you not turn eye and heart to the nearest familiar thing, and see in the soundness of its making the proof of the One who made it sound?"
A reading that hears looking as a piercing to the how, and the camel as a familiar witness to the soundness of the making.
The two readings do not conflict. The first fixes the creature in its setting; the second hears, in the roots, the shape of a piercing gaze and a sound making. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante
Tadabbur
First, the structure: the verse is an urging call, not a piece of news handed over. It begins with reproach (a-falā), then names what is to be looked at (al-ibil), then fixes the direction of the looking (kayfa khuliqat). It moves the eye in three steps: from heedlessness to attention, from attention to the familiar creature, and from the familiar to the manner of its making.
Second, its place in the Surah: the verse comes after the mention of two destinies, faces toiling and humbled and faces at ease in a lofty garden. So looking at creation is not an isolated reflection but a proof tied to the destination: the One who made this near thing sound is able to do what was promised of raising and recompense. The seen and near becomes a witness to the absent and promised.
Third, the overlooked familiar: why the camels and not something else? Because the looking sought is not at the rare and startling but at the constant, which people have grown so safe with that they have gone blind to it. The greatest signs are those whose familiarity has lengthened, and the verse opens the eye to what is trodden every day.
Fourth, an open listening to "how": when the verse asks "how they were made," it may open a door that does not close. Perhaps the detail of this making grows clearer the more closely it is looked at: a body that manages its water and endures thirst for long stretches, a foot that spreads on the sand and does not sink, an eye guarded against the storm, a frame that carries the burden across the waste. Each closer scrutiny of the "how" may be a fresh confirmation of the verse itself, as if the question were framed to stay open to every coming gaze, its answer never exhausted by one generation. And perhaps the soundness of what is measured and weighed points, the more it is examined, to a measuring that precedes it and does not fall by chance. All of this is conjecture, and we halt at its limit.
Tadabbur
