﴾ So that He might cut off a part of those who disbelieved, or suppress them, so they would turn back disappointed. ﴿
The purposive particle opens an aim of the help confined to Allah: that He cut off. Cutting, from q-ṭ-ʿ, is a knot that closes broadly and then emerges from the depth in separation, so it parts what had been joined. Its object is "a part," in the indefinite, rather than the whole group. Edge, from ṭ-r-f, is a broad closure that runs onward and then opens a cleft at its end, so it carries the sense of a side or a rim. The aim is therefore directed to a part, not to the whole, and the indefiniteness prevents it from being turned into a total uprooting that the text never pronounced.
"Of," following "a part," states outright that what is cut off is a portion of those who disbelieved, so the cutting strikes a part and not a whole. The relative expression grants them no inherited identity; its clause ties the ruling to the disbelief that occurred from them. Disbelief, from k-f-r, is a concealment that opens a cleft and then runs onward in veiling. Taken together, "a part," "of," and the mark of the relative set three limits at once: a part rather than the whole, drawn from a group rather than from people at large, and a group defined by its act rather than by its lineage.
"Or" coordinates a second aim with the cutting, that He suppress them, and the alternative within the aim thus opens an inward suppression. Suppression, from k-b-t, is a concealment held under pressure that then closes in cutting and completion, turning movement back into a subdued interior. The pronoun returns to those who disbelieved, while the verb itself is a halting of the impetus and a humbling of the intent, not the equal of cutting. "Or" preserves the difference between the two ways toward the coming result: a cutting that takes an edge from the group, and a suppression that turns the whole group back into itself without taking anything from it. Both are ascribed to the subject for whom the purposive particle opened in "that He cut off."
The result connective ties the cutting or the suppression to what follows, their turning back, and the result is a return carrying a continuing disappointment. Reversal, from q-l-b, is a knot that attaches and extends and then connects to a following face; the receptive form carries the change as something occurring upon them, together with their return from the direction they had taken. "Disappointed" is a concurrent state from kh-y-b, a striving that extends with an unseen emptiness inside it and then opens at its end, so that its bearer comes out empty-handed and the striving ends at something other than what it sought. The active participle carries an active nature continuing in disappointment at the moment of the turning.
The verse marks off one of the aims of the help by precise limits visible in its own wording. The cutting falls upon an edge of those defined by the act of disbelief, or else the suppression falls upon them and turns their impetus back, and the two ways then meet in a reversal carrying the state of disappointment. The partition is set down explicitly in "a part of," the act in the relative clause, and the result at which the wording stops is a return in a state of disappointment, not the reaching of an intent. So the ruling stays at the measure of the precise composition.
