﴾ Nothing of the matter belongs to you, whether He turns toward them or punishes them, for they are wrongdoers. ﴿
"Is not" opens a negation directed to a singular addressee whom the verse does not name, and the matter does not pass over to him. "For you" is fronted, so the one from whom attribution is denied appears first, and only after it come "of the matter" and "anything." Matter, from ʾ-m-r, is a cut that gathers in a joining and then runs onward as an affair coming to be. "Anything" is indefinite, and with "of" in a setting of negation it takes in the least share that could be conceived. The text denies that the addressee has anything of the matter at all, rather than merely denying him independence in it.
"Or" opens a possible course after the cutting or the suppression, that He turn toward them, and the course of return remains with Allah. Turning, from t-w-b, is a letting go of a course its bearer had been keeping and a return that stretches back to what he had left, so the movement bends back and returns to its point of reference. The verb is ascribed to the unstated pronoun returning to Allah, while "upon them" makes them the place of this turning and this acceptance. Who will receive this course, and how, the verse leaves undetermined; what it does is set the very possibility of it outside the possession of the addressee from whom the matter was denied.
"Or" comes again and coordinates the punishing with the turning, so the text does not fold the two courses into a single ruling upon individuals, and the punishment stays on the same side. In ʿ-dh-b the event begins as an emergence out of depth, then penetrates sharply and without break, and then has its trace held under pressure so that it does not scatter; the doubled dhāl makes that penetration recurrent in its rhythm rather than a single blow that passes and is done. The object pronoun returns to the same group, and the subject of the two courses is one, left unstated in each, so that a single side owns the turning and the punishment together. Turning and punishment alike therefore lie within the matter denied to the addressee.
The result connective ties the two courses to an emphatic reason, that they are wrongdoers, and the reason describes their state without owning the outcome. In ẓ-l-m a covering closes over a thing and takes hold of it, keeping it held within, so that the right comes to lie beneath a covering that holds it back from its owner. The description came as a noun rather than a past verb, so it reports a state standing in them at the moment of address, not a wrongdoing that has ended. It then serves as the reason for both courses at once: it explains why their matter came to belong to another, and it leaves the course that befalls them to the owner of the matter, who alone holds it. The description does not, however, give the addressee possession of the final ruling; the first sentence came before it and denied him the matter, and turning and punishment remained with Allah.
The verse cuts off any share of the matter for the singular addressee and then opens two courses he does not own: that Allah turn toward them, or that He punish them. Their description as wrongdoers comes as the reason for their state, not as a delegation to the addressee over what becomes of them. By this the wording separates knowing the quality from owning the ruling, and what appears of wrongdoing from what Allah chooses of turning or of punishment. The address remains as the verse shaped it: a singular "you" in "belongs to you," from which the share is denied; a plural "them" in "toward them" and "punishes them," the place of the two courses; and one subject who owns them both and is not named twice between them.
