﴾ Allah made it only as good news for you and so that your hearts might become tranquil through it. Help comes only from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise. ﴿
The wāw joins a sentence in which the object pronoun of "made it" returns to the reinforcement named just before, with the name of Allah as its explicit agent. Making, from j-ʿ-l, is a gathering that rises out of depth, then attaches and extends until a thing comes to stand in a state or a function. "Only" confines that function to good news and to nothing besides. Good news, from b-sh-r, is a connection that closes in a gathering and then runs on unbroken to the surface of the one who carries it, so it bears a report at which the face opens. "For you" makes it the addressees' news, not a power standing on its own, and the glad tidings settle the heart without owning the reinforcement.
The wāw joins the particle of purpose to "for you," opening a second effect of the making: that your hearts become tranquil through it. Tranquility, from ṭ-m-n, is a broad closing that gathers in a joining and then holds inwardly, and the pattern thickens the settling of movement after disturbance. The hearts are the subject of the verb and are annexed to the addressees, while the bāʾ ties their tranquility to the pronoun of the reinforcement, or of the making, as it was named. The purpose the composition states is a measured inward effect, hearts that come to rest through what was made good news for them; the effect falls in the place the wording names, not in what lies around it, and the purpose carries the good news over into an inward stillness.
The "only" construction returns, this time confining help itself rather than the function of the reinforcement. Help, from n-ṣ-r, is a containing that meets a firm grip and then runs on unbroken as an aid that carries. "From Allah" places the source and the direction with Him alone, and the word "with" sets help in its owner's own keeping before it reaches anyone at all. By this the composition separates the good news, through which hearts are made tranquil, from the help that the verse has confined to this one side: the reinforcement is a cause of tranquility, the wellspring of aid is Allah, and help remains where its source is.
The two attributes "the Mighty, the Wise" follow the name of Allah in the genitive. Might carries an impregnable power whose center is never reached, which fits the confinement of help with Him. Wisdom, from ḥ-k-m, is a narrowing that withholds and grips, then gathers in a joining and a holding fast, so it sets a thing in an exact measure; "Wise" is a settled attribute carrying the continuance of that exactness. So power does not slip loose from the balance, and good news does not take the place of the Mighty and Wise doer of help. The two attributes bind power and measure fast together.
The composition raises two confinements, which keep two things from being mixed. Allah made the reinforcement good news for the addressees and a way to the tranquility of their hearts, and that is the function "only" confined to it. Help is only from Allah, so the second confinement returns the wellspring to the Name alone and leaves what the senses register in the place of the glad tidings rather than in the place of the agent. The two attributes, the Mighty and the Wise, then gather power and exact measure in the Name from which the making and the help alike issued: tranquility is an effect, good news is a function, and Allah is the source of aid.
