﴾ For a day whose weight has no seen edge (ʿaẓīm). ﴿
The verse says "for a day," not "on a day." The lām is the lām of destination: the raising is directed toward it and referred to it, not merely happening inside it. A day aimed at, not a day fallen into.
And this lām is the letter that went missing from kālūhum, and the letter that carried the ruin to them at the head of the surah. One letter hangs whatever is hung: they dropped it out of another's share, and it ties their own share to its appointed time.
Yawm is indefinite, neither named nor defined. The root y-w-m is a stretch of duration gathered by two ends, a portion with a first and a last rather than time at large. So its name is unknown and its being bounded is known. The next verse will define it by what happens in it.
The root ʿ-ẓ-m is a fusing in the depth over which a closing draws, veiling its limit, and then a gathering that presses the veiled thing into a single mass. So ʿiẓam is a weight belonging to a thing itself, whose limit is not encompassed. From this root comes the bone in the body: what carries the frame, and the heaviest thing in it.
Here the surah meets itself. This craft is nothing but boundaries: the brim of the vessel, the edge of the pan, the single hair that divides full from short. And now a weight is set before them whose limit is veiled and not to be taken in.
There is neither length nor breadth in the word. ʿAẓīm, in its letters, is a depth closed over, not an extension a rule could run along. And that is the hardest thing to put before a man who lives by measurements.
The rhyme is heard along with the sense. The four verses before this one close on an n that rings in the nose and then goes out: muṭaffifīn, yastawfūn, yukhsirūn, mabʿūthūn. Then the recitation halts on ʿaẓīm, the lips shut on the m, and the sound is held in the hollow. The one line-ending among these five that closes the mouth is the one that names what cannot be encompassed, and the n returns in the verse after it.
Whoever lived on the brim of the vessel is stood before a weight that has no brim.
Two words complete the line before them. "For a day," with a lām and not with "in": a destination aimed at, not a vessel of time fallen into. It is the same lām that carried the ruin to them at the head of the surah and that went missing from kālūhum. The root y-w-m is a portion gathered by two ends, and the indefinite leaves its name unknown while its boundedness is known, the next verse defining it by what happens in it. And ʿaẓīm, from ʿ-ẓ-m: a fusing in the depth veiled by a closing and then gathered into one mass, a weight belonging to the thing itself whose limit is not encompassed, in a form that makes it a settled attribute rather than a passing state. Against a craft that is all boundaries and fineness at the brim, the surah sets a weight with no brim to measure. And the rhyme is heard along with the sense: four verses close on an n that rings and goes out, then the m shuts the lips on this one alone, and the n returns in the verse after.
