The first parable in the Qur'an: parable as psychological diagnostic
This is the first parable to descend in the Qur'an after the disjointed letters and the opening verses. It descends in the description of the hypocrites, not of the believers, nor of the open disbelievers. The position is deliberate: the parable in the Qur'an is a diagnostic instrument that discloses what direct description cannot disclose. The disbeliever is known by his denial, the believer by his confession, but the hypocrite covers his stance, so the Qur'an needs a visual image to expose him.
Consider: in al-Jumuʿa, a parable descends on those who were burdened with the Torah and then did not carry it: "like the donkey carrying volumes" (62:5), a donkey carrying books and benefiting nothing from them. In al-Aʿrāf, a parable descends on the one to whom God gave His signs, who then sloughed them off: "like the dog" (7:176). In Ibrāhīm, a parable descends on the disbelievers: "like ashes upon which the wind has blown fierce" (14:18).
The rule: the parable in the Qur'an descends upon those whose exposure requires more than description. He whose stance is plain needs no parable. He who is variegated requires an image that exposes him by parallel position. And the hypocrite in the Qur'an is the first upon whom a parable descends, because hypocrisy itself is a visual stance: it strikes a fire, lights up the surroundings, but the source is missing. The image is the diagnosis.
"Istawqada," not "awqada": the fire is borrowed
The specific form istawqada (on the pattern istafʿala) carries the meaning of requesting. The Qur'an does not say "he kindled a fire" (i.e., he originated it himself), but "he sought-to-kindle" (i.e., he requested its kindling from outside). The difference is structural: the hypocrite does not generate his faith from within; he borrows its image from outside. His light is a community's light, not a heart's light.
This meets a set of Qur'anic verbs on the pattern istafʿala that expose the seeking of something from outside: istakbara (sought arrogance from outside, where its owner does not deserve it), istaʿjala (sought a hastening without standing), istakhaffa (sought a lightness not his own). The form exposes that the agent is seeking what is not in him. And the hypocrite seeks a fire because his own self is empty of it.
That is why the scene closes with: "God took away their light", note, "their light," even though the fire was borrowed. The light was attributed to them because they imagined it was their own. Then it left. And the place from which the light departed retained its dweller, him, in darkness. The light is borrowed; the darkness is the substance. The final statement is terrifying: the departure of the light disclosed what was hidden beneath it.
The arc of the parable: from light to ẓulumāt
The parable graduates in four stages: (1) he sought-to-kindle. (2) it illuminated what was around him. (3) God took away their light. (4) He left them in darknesses, unseeing. The scene ends at exactly this closing: a light kindled, then taken, then darknesses with no sight. Whatever psychological result follows belongs to the next verse (2:18).
This discloses a deep psychological law: borrowed light, when it goes out, leaves its possessor worse than he was. Had he not sought to kindle, he would have been in plain darkness. But he kindled and then was extinguished, so he is now in doubled darkness: the darkness of the situation, and the darkness of loss. And the difference between "did not see" and "saw and then lost" is a large psychological difference. He who saw and lost is certain of his darkness; he who did not see may imagine the light.
This parable is one image among several the Qur'an strikes for the variegated person: the opening of this reflection saw how a parable descends on the donkey carrying volumes (62:5), on the dog (7:176), on ash scattered by the wind (14:18). And immediately after this one comes another parable for the hypocrite, the parable of the downpour (2:19), whose detail belongs to its own verse. Every parable discloses one angle of the variegated person, and image exposes what description cannot.
