﴾ Do not weaken and do not grieve, while you are the uppermost, if you are ones who give trust. ﴿
The conjunction joins this prohibition to the clarification, the guidance, and the admonition that preceded, carrying them over into a response within the state of those addressed, and the first prohibition cuts off the entry of weakness. The prohibitive particle governs the plural present "weaken" and cuts its ending short. Weakness, from w-h-n, is a knot that encircles and binds, then what it binds thins and fades, and that fading is held fast within the hollow, drawing a strength that thins from within until it slackens. The prohibition is directed at the movement itself and bars those addressed from surrendering to its seepage.
The conjunction and the prohibitive particle repeat the structure of the prohibition, while the act changes from weakening to grief, and the second prohibition governs the closing in of the inward. Grief, from ḥ-z-n, is a narrowing that contains within, then compresses in a strait and is held in the hollow, so that it carries an inward pain weighing upon the course. The repetition of the particle lets each movement stand on its own: do not let strength slacken, and do not let the inward close in grief. The text does not deny that pain may touch them; what the command forbids is taking it as the state that leads their movement.
Here the conjunction is circumstantial, and the pronoun brings those addressed themselves into presence: while you are the uppermost. Height, from ʿ-l-w, is an appearing from the depth that attaches to a rank and then opens outward, so that it carries an elevation above what is low. The form "the uppermost" gathers them in the higher direction and makes it a circumstance that withstands weakening and grief. The sentence, however, releases no superiority of lineage or of race and promises no detached result; the condition that follows governs it and forbids its being torn out of its own construction.
"If" enters and ties what precedes it to an explicit condition, if you are those who give trust, so that trust carries the direction of height. Being, from k-w-n, is a retention that keeps a thing within and then issues from the inward, so that it carries the standing of a state and its realization; the predicate of "you are" is "those who give trust." Trust, from ʾ-m-n, is a release that enters gathering and close contact and then settles in an inward containment, drawing a confidence that has a place of safety. The active participle carries a continuing active nature, and it is by this condition alone that the state of "the uppermost" is read in the verse.
The verse gathers two prohibitions, a circumstance, and a condition into a structure whose parts do not come apart from one another. The prohibitive particle halts the seepage of weakening and the closing of grief, and then places those addressed in the state of height. Yet "if" ties that height to their being those who give trust, and the active participle asks for a continuing nature of trust rather than an inherited title. "The uppermost" is therefore not read as an absolute promise made to a group whatever it does; it is a direction conditioned upon trust within the construction itself, and from it weakness and grief are withstood.
