Commentary
"If" opens the possibility of a condition and enters upon the present "touches you," and the wound it names sets the two positions in a balance. Touch, from m-s-s, is a gathering and a meeting that enters a fine course, its connection thickened by the repetition of the sibilant, so that it carries a direct arrival at those addressed. The subject, "a wound," is from q-r-ḥ: a knot in the depth that runs and then enters an inward containment, naming an injury joined to the body or to the condition. The word is indefinite, so the clause halts at the single measure it carries, a wound that touches them, and it is that very measure which the answer will turn into a balance, setting against it a wound like it, neither more nor less.
The consequence particle joins the answer of the condition, and the particle of confirmation realizes the past: it touched the people, so the answer raises an explicit likeness. The object "the people" comes first and the subject "a wound" after it, so the touch is distributed over a group that this word names. The people, from q-w-m, is a knot closing in the depth that holds from within what it has gathered, carrying a group standing together. The phrase "like it" refers back to the first wound and confines the likeness to this injury already named.
The conjunction begins a fresh sentence in which "those" points to the days, and the pronoun of "We alternate them" refers back to them as object, so the alternation moves the days among the group. Day, from y-w-m, is a span that runs on and then closes at its limit, gathering time into one unit. Alternation, from d-w-l, is something held that clings to its holder and then slips from him, stretching on to another, and the reciprocal form carries an exchanged succession. The adverbial "among people" bounds the field of the movement, so the day does not hold fast to one side.
The conjunction and the purpose particle enter upon "may know" and bind the alternation of the days to an outcome: that Allah may know those who trusted. So the alternation discloses trust and takes the witnesses. The verb remains in its place as an outcome in which the bearers of trust appear, and "and take" then coordinates a second outcome. Taking, from ʾ-kh-dh, is a release that pierces and passes through in connection, so that it carries an intended taking. "From among you" is partitive and confines the taking to some of those addressed, while sh-h-d spreads presence and then fixes it, so that those taken from among them become witnesses.
The conjunction then brings a sentence in which the name of Allah precedes its predicate, and the negation falls upon the present verb "loves," lifting the renewal of love away from the wrongdoers. In ẓ-l-m, the cover closes over a thing and takes hold of it, keeping it held within, so that it holds the right back from its owner, and "the wrongdoers" presents the bearers of that covering as standing in their own act. The sentence thus seals the movement of the days, of the knowing, and of the taking with a measure that ties the ruling to the act of wrong, so that the alternation of days remains a movement which justifies nothing, for the one whose day it is, of what he does within it.
The verse begins with a bounded likeness: if a wound touches those addressed, a wound like it has touched the people. It then passes over into time, making the days the object of an alternation among people rather than the property of one side, and the purpose particle joins that alternation to Allah's knowing those who trusted and to the taking of witnesses from among them. In the wording itself the witnesses are taken "from among you": they are a part of those addressed, taken by the very one who alternates the days. The closing lifts Allah's love away from the bearers of continuing wrong, and so keeps the turning of the state from being read as approval of it.
Commentaire

Two Readings
Common reading
The verse is commonly read as balancing two wounds, stating the alternation of days among people, recognizing those who trusted, taking witnesses from the addressees, and denying love for wrongdoers.
A reading presenting likeness, alternation, two outcomes, and conclusion.
A root-reading
Touch (root m-s-s) joins the wound (root q-r-ḥ), alternation (root d-w-l) exchanges the days, and taking (root ʾ-kh-dh) opens toward some witnesses (root sh-h-d) from the addressees.
A reading following connection from wound into witness.
The two readings do not conflict. The first presents the verse's movement; the second discloses its root joints. This book chooses the additional listening.
Deux Lectures
Lecture courante

Interpretation
First: what the letters say
Touch, from m s s, is a gathering and meeting that enters a precise channel, and the doubled sīn intensifies its passage between barriers; it is the least of contacts and the truest, holding fast without needing any quantity. A wound, from q r ḥ, is a knot in depth that flows and then contains inwardly: an injury that does not stay on the surface but whose trace settles within. A day, from y w m, is a span that runs on and then closes at its limit: a space collected out of the flow of time, not an open line without limit. Alternation, from d w l, is something held that clings to its holder and then slips from him, stretching on to another, and the reciprocal form makes the passing mutual; in this wording the days are something handed from one hand to another. Knowing, from ʿ l m, is an emergence from depth that attaches to what has emerged and is then gathered in a firm connection, so in this sentence it is a place of disclosure. Witnesses, from sh h d, are a spreading that fades into vacancy and is then fixed by the dāl and driven into appearance: a presence that had been dissolving and became attested. And wrongdoing, from ẓ l m, is a covering that closes over a thing and takes hold of it, keeping it held within, so that it holds the right back from its owner. The verse thus brings together a touch on the body, a rotation in time, and a disclosure that comes out of the inside into the open.
Second: the scene
The verse begins with a weighing rather than a consolation: "if a wound touches you, a wound like it has touched the people." The word is one on both sides, its indefiniteness is one on both sides, and "like it" confines the resemblance to that measure and adds nothing beyond it. The speech then moves from the wound to time: "those days, We alternate them among people." The days have become an object rather than an agent, the agent is one speaker who pushes them along, and "among people" prevents them from settling at any one side. Then the purposive particle brings two outcomes: that Allah may know those who trusted, and that He may take witnesses from among you; and "from among you" is partitive, so those taken are a portion of the addressees themselves. The sentence then closes by denying love to the wrongdoers, setting a limit upon how the alternation may be read: that the turning of the day is no endorsement of what is done within it. The scene is therefore a shared wound, a time that is handed on, a disclosure that runs during the handing, and a measure that remains standing over the one whose turn it is. It is worth noting that the sentence names no agent for the wound on either side, while it names an explicit agent for the days; so what fell upon bodies is left unattributed, and what runs in time is ascribed to the one who directs it. The verse stands between the two: it lightens the first by matching it, and ties the second to the purpose named after it.
Third: the pattern that may recur in any time and place
This structure recurs in every community struck by a reversal after a season of strength. The first thing that falls upon the soul at a reversal is a sense of being singled out: that what happened happened to us alone, and that the matter is a departure from any general way. The verse begins exactly there, setting a wound against a wound, and so moves the event out of the category of exception into the category of the shared. It then offers time a second picture: days handed among people, not owned by whoever holds them today. In that picture there is consolation for the wounded and warning for the established in a single breath. But the structure does not stop at the rotation, because rotation alone produces surrender: whoever sees the matter as bare turning finds no meaning left in his own work. That is why the handing on is tied to an outcome in which its people appear, so that time becomes a place of disclosure rather than a place of futility. And the last thing in the pattern is that the rotation does not excuse the wrongdoing of the one whose turn it is: the closing denial cuts off whoever would read a licence for himself in the changing of conditions. In this structure there is a remedy for two opposite ailments: that of the one who reckons a reversal to be an ending and so sits down, and that of the one who reckons his ascendancy to be a possession and so oversteps. The first is treated by the matching in the verse's opening, the second by the handing on in its middle, and both are returned at last to the measure of its close.
Fourth: anthropological speculations and projections
The description "those days, We alternate them" may parallel what historians study under the name of cyclical models of the rise and fall of groups, whose best-known Arabic formulation is what Ibn Khaldun described as a cycle in which group solidarity strengthens, then settles, then dissolves. What arrests the reader here is that the verse does not make the cycle a law standing on its own: it ascribes it to an agent in the words "We alternate them" and ties it to a purpose stated immediately after; and that difference is what prevents history from being read as an empty wheel turning without meaning.
The matching of one wound against the other may also meet what students of psychology call common humanity, which they count among the strongest things that lighten the sense of being singled out by misfortune; for the afflicted, once he knows that the like of what struck him has struck others, comes out of his isolation and returns to action. It is worth noting that the verse does this with one repeated word rather than a long explanation, placing the consolation in the structure of the sentence itself.
And the taking of witnesses "from among you" may touch what is studied under the name of collective memory, where times of hardship generate reference figures that a community afterwards carries for generations and measures itself against. This is a possible parallel in describing what passes among people, not a claim that the verse settles a theory of history or of the soul.
