﴾ If you are killed in Allah's path or die, forgiveness from Allah and mercy are better than what they gather. ﴿
The wāw joins a condition made emphatic by the lām and by "if": if you are killed. The verb is a past in the passive, which leaves the agent unnamed, and the addressees thus stand out as the place where the killing falls. Killing, from q-t-l, denotes a knot in the depth of a thing that is cut, so that what it clung to and held slips away from it, while the adverbial "in Allah's path" sets its falling inside a way, from s-b-l, a fine confining that connects and then extends toward its end. So the condition gathers the falling of the killing upon the addressees together with its place in Allah's path. Being killed on the way does not cut the mercy off.
"Or" joins "you die" to "you are killed" and keeps each act within its own limit. Death, from m-w-t, is a stretch that lengthens and then ends in the cutting and the completion; the verb here has its agent known and is attributed to the addressees from the side of the state befalling them. The constraint "in Allah's path" attaches to the killing within its own construction, while dying enters as a second and independent alternative, a way standing on its own, and one single answer then comes for the two possibilities.
The lām enters upon the answer of the condition and makes it emphatic: forgiveness from Allah, and mercy. Forgiveness, from gh-f-r, is an inward sinking that opens a cleft and then runs on as a covering, and "from Allah" keeps its source a giving out of Him. The wāw joins "mercy," from r-ḥ-m, a flowing that enters an inward containing and then gathers in a meeting, so it carries a softness that surrounds. The two nouns are indefinite and stand as one shared answer to the two possibilities, an answer that begins with a covering and a containing, and the source declared for them both is Allah.
"Better" is the predicate of the forgiveness and the mercy, and "than" opens the comparison with "what they gather." Good, from kh-y-r, is a running pierce that extends and then runs on with its benefit toward its end. Gathering is from j-m-ʿ, a gathering that joins and meets and then appears within a space, and the imperfect makes it renewed. The plural wāw of the absent differs from the tāʾ of the addressees, so it parts the gatherers from those to whom the condition is given, while the relative "what" keeps their gathered thing in its generality. The comparison therefore falls between the two gifts and what they gather. The comparative sets the giving against the gathering of the absent.
The verse opens two possibilities that the coordination keeps apart: that the addressees be killed in Allah's path, or that they die. The answer of the condition is a forgiveness whose source is Allah and a mercy that contains, after which the comparative rules that the two of them are better than what the absent ones gather. Its force lies in moving the balance from two different endings of the body over to a covering and a mercy, set against a gathering that goes on and on in hands other than those of the addressees.
