﴾ Allah certainly bestowed favor upon those who give trust when He raised among them a messenger from themselves, reciting His signs to them, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, though before that they were indeed in manifest error. ﴿
The emphatic lām and "certainly" together confirm the past, and the name of Allah stands as agent of the verb: He bestowed favor. Favor, from m-n-n, is a gathering held in the interior that then issues outward and passes through, and the repeated n intensifies the extension of the giving toward the one who receives it. The preposition "upon" joins the favor to those who give trust, and the plural active participle conveys a nature of trust that is active and continuing. The participle makes them bearers of a quality established by their own act, so the favor falls upon everyone of whom the description pronounced by the verse holds true.
"When" ties the favor to the time of raising a messenger among them. Raising is a movement of sending after a gathering, and the object, "a messenger," is indefinite and then described by "from themselves." The preposition "among" places his presence inside their community, while "from" traces his issuing back to their own selves. The favor is thereby determined by a messenger whom a bond of interior and of origin joins to those addressed, and whom the acts that follow define by his function.
The verbal clause describes the messenger by three courses, the first of which is the recitation of Allah's signs to them. The possessive in "His signs" refers to Allah, so the messenger does not own their source. The conjunction then adds "and purifies them." Purification, from z-k-w, is a hoarding that compresses under a holding concealment and then opens into growth, and the doubled form carries a sustained, repeated charge. The object is the pronoun of the group, so the purifying falls upon those same people, and the repetition of the charge makes it a renewed work and not a single event.
The conjunction adds the third act, "and teaches them," a doubled form from ʿ-l-m that carries a sustained, repeated charge in the transfer of knowledge. The pronoun of the group is its first object; "the Book" and "wisdom" then follow as the two objects of what is taught, with the conjunction still standing between them as a separation. The messenger's function is thus gathered into the teaching of two things the text named side by side and kept distinct.
The final wāw is circumstantial, and the lightened in together with the lām in the predicate confirm their prior state. "Before" places the straying ahead of the raising and of the three acts. Straying, from ḍ-l-l, is a heavy gathering that extends and is then cut off from its aim by the repeated lām; it is described as "manifest," a word that conveys a nature of continuing disclosure. The preposition "in" makes the straying a space they were inside, answering the first space in "raised among them": a passage from one enclosure to another.
The verse confirms Allah's favor upon those who give trust by the raising of a messenger among them and from themselves, so that a bond of interior and of origin joins him to them at once. It then details his effect in three renewed acts: he recites Allah's signs to them, he purifies them with a sustained and repeated purifying, and he teaches them the Book and wisdom. After that it sets these movements opposite a prior state of manifest straying. The favor is therefore a raising, a bond, a recitation, a purifying, and a teaching, not a bare title: renewed acts that carry them out of the space of straying into the space of the Book and wisdom.
