﴾ They are degrees with Allah, and Allah sees fully what they do. ﴿
The pronoun of the absent opens a nominal sentence that refers to the two sides the preceding verse had set apart. The predicate, "degrees," is an indefinite plural, and the degrees are predicated of them directly. This direct predication thickens their bond with their positions and keeps the difference between single persons alive inside the plural. Degree, from d-r-j, is a steady pressure that runs and then gathers into a raised step, so it carries an ordered passage between one position and another, and so the open plural makes the ranking itself the news told about them.
"With Allah" attaches to that predicate and sets both the place of the degrees and the ruling upon them with Allah. The nearness the preposition names is bounded by its annexation to the name of Allah, so the quarter in which the assessing is done stays with Him. The pronoun "they" gathers the sides mentioned before, and the predicate of degrees carries their difference inside that assessing.
The conjunction joins a second nominal sentence, in which the name of Allah is repeated explicitly in place of a pronoun, so the emphasis stands on its own at the close. "Sees fully," from b-ṣ-r, is a connection that enters a firm closing upon its object and then runs on as a penetrating perception. The intensive form conveys the density of that seeing and its continuance; so the assessing with Allah stands together with a sight that penetrates and does not lapse.
The preposition attaches to the relative "what," whose clause is a present verb predicated of them: they do. Work, from ʿ-m-l, is an effect that comes up out of the depth, gathers, and then attaches to the place it marks. The present carries the renewal of the act, and the relative gathers the kinds of it under one generality. The plural pronoun brings the bearers of the degrees back into the circle of the act that is seen, so that their positions at the close hang upon what they do under Allah's sight.
The verse presses the opposition of the preceding verse into one short phrase: they are degrees with Allah. The plural fixes the ranking, and the preposition keeps the assessing with Allah. The second sentence then ties that to a dense and unbroken seeing of what they do, and the renewed act becomes the declared object of that sight: bearers of degrees with Allah, whose deeds are present beneath His seeing.
