﴾ When an affliction struck you, though you had struck twice its like, did you say, 'From where is this?' Say, 'It is from your own selves.' Allah is capable over every thing. ﴿
The opening particle with the conjunction forms a question that joins this speech to what came before it, and "when" opens the time in which the act fell. "Struck," from ṣ-w-b, is something that pours down from one side and lands on one particular place, so it carries a direct arrival upon a target. The subject, "an affliction," is indefinite, and the pronoun bound to the verb is a plural object; so what the question stands upon is the arrival of an affliction upon the company addressed.
The particle of confirmation enters upon a past verb predicated of those addressed, establishing that before this they had struck "twice its like." The dual refers its pronoun to the affliction itself, so two measures of its own likeness are kept. Likeness, from m-th-l, is an adhering that gathers in fine density and then becomes distinct at the face where the resemblance shows; so the comparison sets the affliction that reached them opposite two of its like that those addressed had already struck.
The answer to "when" is the saying of those addressed: "From where is this?" The singular demonstrative refers to the affliction already named, and the interrogative asks after the quarter from which it came. The saying displays their astonishment after the setting against two of its like, and the order of the verse places the striking that came from them before their wonder at a striking that reached them.
The command is addressed to a single person and gives a brief answer: "It is from your own selves." The pronoun refers to "this," and "from" opens the quarter of beginning; "with" then gathers nearness, and "your own selves" names the interior ascribed to the group. The answer turns the quarter of beginning, sought by the question "from where," back into their own selves, so the affliction returns to them from the nearest place there is.
The particle of emphasis closes the verse, and "capable" stands as a predicate attached to "over every thing." Capability, from q-d-r, is a knotting that holds firm under pressure and then runs on as a measuring that penetrates, and the intensive form conveys the density of that capability and its continuance. "Every" takes the things in one by one. So the ascribing of the beginning to their own selves meets the encompassing of Allah's capability over every thing.
The verse calls up an affliction that reached those addressed after they had struck twice its like. It then carries over their question, "From where is this?", and answers with an explicit command: it is from your own selves. So the quarter of beginning returns into the interior of the group, while the close keeps Allah's capability over every thing. Responsibility borne by the selves and an encompassing that leaves nothing out gather in one answer.
