﴾ They receive glad tidings of a blessing from Allah and bounty, and that Allah does not let the reward of those who give trust go to waste. ﴿
The imperfect verb opens with the plural wāw, which refers back to the living ones just spoken of, and so it joins this verse to their earlier state. The term for glad tidings, from b-sh-r, denotes a connection whose effect spreads and then runs, penetrating, into the one who receives it; the istifʿāl form carries at once the taking in of the gladness and its outward showing. The renewal proper to the imperfect makes them people of a joyful reception, and by that movement of reception alone the verse dispenses with any figure who bears the news and with any moment at which it came. The centre of the scene is the effect of the tidings in them.
The bāʾ attaches to "a blessing," an indefinite noun, and makes it either the content of that gladness or its cause. A blessing, from n-ʿ-m, is a containing that rises out of depth and then gathers and makes adhere, and it carries a benefit that settles and stays with the one who receives it. "From Allah" preserves its source, after which the wāw coordinates "and bounty" to it, likewise indefinite. The two words stand side by side without being synonyms: a blessing whose benefit settles, and a bounty that overflows as increase. Their indefiniteness opens the giving onto an amplitude beyond every estimate.
The wāw coordinates to what precedes a clause affirmed by "that," and this clause in its turn enters into the content of the gladness. The name of Allah stands as the subject of that affirmation, and the affirmation is placed before the negation that follows it. The construction joins a blessing and a bounty from Allah to a rule bearing upon Allah's own acting: the tidings are complete only when the giving comes from its source and the reward remains kept with Him.
The imperfect "go to waste," from ḍ-y-ʿ, denotes what is gathered and held and then seeps out of its hold through a narrow outlet until it leaves the place of keeping; the ifʿāl form refers the causing of that loss to an agent, while the negation turns it away from Allah. The object "the reward," from ʾ-j-r, is a release that gathers and then runs to the one to whom it is due, and it is annexed to those who give trust. The active participle conveys an acting nature that continues in trust, and it is enough here for the reward to be called kept for its very guarantee to become the place of the gladness.
The gladness of the living ones reaches out to a blessing from Allah and to a bounty, both indefinite, and this opens the giving onto an amplitude. The content of the tidings then widens to an affirmed clause: Allah does not let the reward of those who give trust go to waste. The particle "from" preserves the source of the blessing, and the denial of wasting secures the arrival of the reward to the people of trust. The coordination makes that affirmed clause part of the tidings itself, so that the safety of the reward, the blessing and the bounty meet in a single tranquillity whose source is Allah.
